Extracurriculars: WashU Student Groups and Organizations

Here is the Student Union website with the Student Group directory.

Student Group Directory | Student Union

Click 'List All Groups,' and there you should find a pretty comprehensive list of all student organizations.

Just a sampling of what you can participate in (a very small sampling!)

Volunteering:
Campus YMCA: Host parties for children staying in the hospital; tutor kids in disadvantaged areas; be a big brother or sister mentor to a younger kid; go on Alternative Spring Break trips to fix houses in a rural community; educate the community about AIDs; put on science experiments for children at local junior highs and high schools...and of course, MORE.

Trivia Team:
Have you got BUZZER skills?

KWUR:
Be a radio host. Select the music, have your own program.

Spires:
An inter-collegiate literary and art magazine founded at WashU (submissions from colleges around the nation)

The Troll Club:
"We are trolls. Help us live with it. For the promotion of troll culture."

WU Cypher:
Calling all bboys and bgirls ('breakdancing' group)!

WUnderground:
WashU's satire and comedy student publication

WUSLAM:
For the slam poets.

As you can see from the list-- there are too many groups to list. Check them out for yourself!!!

Hmmm...wonder why it's "unloved"...
Okay, I've got a question here:
I'm very interested in WULife, KWUR, Mock Trial, and the Debate Team...with pretty much no previous experiences in any of them - at least, no serious experiences. I know people would probably roll their eyes and say "of course you can join, just go for it"...but considering the limited number of members in, say, the Debate Team, and the actual people you're competing against who were probably team captains in their high schools, I'd say that's a very superficial answer. So I was hoping for some insight into the recruitment...I know there's a huge fair and you could sign up there, but what's the specific process like? What do you have to do - interviews? I know theater and a cappella groups have auditions and call backs and stuff...

Anyone can have a show on KWUR -- there's a "DJ training" session you go to that's run by the student leaders. Then you kind of just put yourself on the show schedule and you're ready to go.

One of my floormates Freshman year had to try out for Mock Trial, and wasn't chosen. I don't know any more details than that -- I take it to mean we ether have a great team in terms of quality (most probable), or she wasn't very good (maybe? i don't know?), or there were just a thousand of other freshman who wanted to be on it and they can't take everyone (maybe true to some extent?).

Don't know anything about the Debate Team except that we have one.

You can go to SU's website and see a listing of all the current student groups and their contact info. SU is the Student Union (student government) at Wash U and manages all of the groups, budgets, etc.

Most groups, though, don't have any sort of try-out or interview process. Clearly, the ones that compete with other colleges and/or rely on quality talent in general (ie, Mock Trial, a cappella, Debate) will have some sort of screening process. But for your average-joe student group like Campus Programming Council, KWUR, WUTV, intramural sports, community service groups, etc, you can sign-up at the Activities Fairs, start randomly showing up to meetings, or just see what your friends do. There are so many flyers and posters on campus that publicize meetings and events that you really have no reason to be un-informed about what groups exist and where to go to meetings.
