Hey today during class my conseulor called me in and asked me if I were interested in this scholarship at WashU called Danmouth (or something). I don't think that's the name of the scholarship since it wasn't on their website so I'm hoping someone could tell me the correct name. I'm pretty sure it sounded something like that.

The Danforth is more than a scholarship - it is a scholars program. Yes, it does involve a merit scholarship that can be anywhere from half tuition to full tuition. It is not on the WashU website - since you can not directly apply for it. You must be nominated by your GC, and each HS can only nominate a limited number of people. After nomination, there is a separate application to complete.

The Scholars program, in addition to money, offers a special pre-orientation program (this year a wilderness camp in northern Michigan), priority registration and housing, special seminars and classes, special on/off campus programs, personal advisors and quite a bit more. This year there were 15 Danforth Scholars. It is well worth while and if you are offered the opportunity to be nominated, you should certainly take it.

oh ok thank you. I found that very insightful. Only 15 kids? That's VERY competitive. Do you know what they look for? When's the application due? Does the conseulor do everything or do I also have to write an application (my conseulor so far has done everything including to ask me to write a couple paragraphs about my summer internship and the research paper that I wrote and presented at the Cleveland Clinic). I was wondering if anyone else could give me some more info. Thanks a lot for that message though, I appreciate it a lot!

I was nominated for the Danforth scholarship last year by my math teacher. It's an intensively competitive scholarship that's in my opinion much more advantageous for out-of-state students and give St. Louis high schoolers virtually no chance, although an 04' Senior from my school did receive the scholarship for the record. When I turned in my scholarship, I'm pretty sure I turned it in after the January regular college app. deadlines and as far as I've seen, my counselor did pretty much nothing because all of my transcript and recommendations, etc. they requested were the same ones used by my regular WashU app. When the application was mailed to me, the letter was composed of 1 page of Danforth scholarship information and 1 page of application. The application itself is very short and in sense is a condensed college app. It requests you to write 1 or 2(can't remember) brief essays. There is also a scholarship folder by WashU which lists several number of different scholarships issued by the school. There was one for each schools I think, african american students scholarship, community service, and more. Either case, each are extremely competitive and they receive thousands of applications for several limited number of scholarships.

Green09 is right in the sense that the Danforth is quite competetive. But considering that the potential value of the Danforth can be almost $130,000 over 4 years that is to be expected. In addition to the money there are multiple additional benefits that I mentioned above. In addition to the initial nomination application, there is an additional application to be submited. This application does require additional essays.

If you are a top applicant to WashU, they can be very generous. I would also recomend that you apply for some of the other scholarships listed on their site. I don't know about a St Louis bias mentioned by green09 - but to the best of my knowledge, there is no specific scholarship reserved for African Americans. The Ervin used to be such, but it is now open to all applicants. Last year the deadline for the Danforth was the same as the regular application deadline.

Congrats. I saw on the other thread that you said only 30 scholarships given out-seems like a long shot. What are the criteria to be chosen?

For the class of 2009 there were 42 Ervin Scholars and 15 Danforth Scholars.

Nominations are done in the fall of your senior year in HS. I assume you are a junior, since it is too late if you are a senior. If your GC does not have nomination forms - they can get them from the WashU admissions office. From what I remember, the deadline for nominations is sometime in October.
