Which clubs are most inexpensive to join and be in (in terms of expenses on any club-associated activities and any necessary equipment) out of the list below? Also, which ones are most active and rewarding to be in? In my high school experience, there have definitely been clubs that have just been there to simply...exist. So which ones are active and getting stuff done? If you have any experience it would be great if you could share...

I've never run into problems with costs when it comes to ECs in college, so I wouldn't be too worried about that. Organizations apply for funding and you can generally get reimbursed for certain expenses.
It'd be really hard to say what is and isn't fulfilling, but just a couple random things:
Wellesley News is weekly, GenerAsians comes out once a semester if that helps give you a feel for their publication timelines and activeness.
I believe CPLA has weekly meetings open to everyone who wants to show up, so it couldn't hurt to try it out yourself.
Wellesley-MIT Ballroom is a time commitment only because you have to account for the bus commute there and back 2-4 times a week. I'm not sure how they handle those costs.
Shakespeare Society and Theatre, applications and auditions apply.
I don't see anything wrong with trying everything out and seeing what fits you (assuming you don't say you'll commit to something and then suddenly flake out). That's sort of what first semester is for.
There will be an org fair about a week or so after classes begin, and you can get most of your questions answered. With the exception of the Shakespeare Society, the other clubs are SOFC constituted, so the expense should be minimal.

Anybody else intimidated by the fact that there are so many clubs they want to join but know they can't? I'm already going to be part of the swim team, and already I want to join 5 or 6 clubs, haha.
Counterpoint has had some controversy article-wise, but IMO it is not controversial in general.
From my experience, each staff has a different dynamic and each publication has its own personality, so what fits would depend on what your skills and goals are when joining.
Well I don't have much experience with writing, but I showed my comics to one of the girls who was an editor of one newspaper and she really liked them. I would like a shot at writing and contributing comics.
BASIC is a volunteer group. Honor society ... you get drafted. I bumped into an acquaintance making tissue paper flowers for something, but never really heard too much about them.
As far as writing for the paper goes, you can be a casual contributor very easily (not that they would love to have more staff, I'm sure they would). I signed up for the Wellesley News at the first org fair, and until graduation, received a weekly email with that week's arts and feature topics. I ended up writing only one article for the paper in my four years, mostly because of time reasons,
