Wes has two programs that fit what you describe. One is the regular Honors program which is just a declaration (usually within your major) that you intend to write a thesis; you pick a thesis advisor by spring semester junior year and you are more or less on your own until a year later when you submit the thesis and it is graded, Honors, high Honors or Pass. The other program may be what you are talking about; it is called "The College Program" and consists of special classes and a small faculty that you enroll in almost exclusively from about sophomore year onward. The College Program has two tracks both of which involve intensive reading and writing and close student/faculty interaction: one is the College of Social Studies (CSS) which is a cross-section of History, Economics and Government; the other is the College of Letters (COL) which is a similar amalgam of language and literature courses that, like CSS, may meet as little as once a week while the rest of your time is spent preparing for them.
