Well Hi,
I've posted a number of these but I think I am going to give it one last shot just to update my list of colleges I applied to/was accepted to.

[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.): Arts and Sciences- Biology Major
[ *] SAT (one sitting): 1940 (Low because of writing) Crit: 690. Math: 680. Writing: 570.
[ *] SAT IIs : Bio: 650. USH: 620
[ *] ACT:
[ *] GPA: 3.92 Weighted. (It's considered a 4.0 at my school)
[ *] Course load (# of AP/IB/H, special courses, etc.): 9 AP classes, 1 Honors Course, all the rest advanced courses
[ *] Rank: 30/309
[ *] Other stats:
[ *] Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc):
First Generation College in America (My parents attended some college in another country, did not graduate)
Low Income <60k
[ *] Essays: CommonApp essay was really good.
[ *] Teacher Recs: I know for a fact one of these is amazing, the other is okay.
[ *] Counselor Rec: Good
[ *] Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.): Conducted college level research in a lab at a state university. (Chemistry) Publishing my research in the next couple of months in a top tier journal.
[ *) Location/Person:
[ *] State or Country:NJ
[ *] School Type:Public
[ *] Ethnicity: African American/White
[ *] Gender: male

Even with the URM thing going for you, getting into Harvard is going to take a miracle (you're at the 5th percentile or something). Brown is also farfetched- but not as much as Harvard. I think you have a realistic shot at UMich. Your biggest problem is that you're applying as a biology major with a, to be completely blunt, lame SAT II biology score. It kind of creates a contradiction. Honestly, you're probably going to get beaten by better (score wise) African American applicants.

Thank you for the (blunt) honesty...

You know, you'd be in a much, much better position if you had 2100. I've seen URM applicants get in with that score- so why don't you just repeat the SAT? You can easily raise the writing score by memorizing a bunch of rules, and you could probably get 700 in both CR and math if you study a little. Don't let a stupid 4 hour test determine your fate! Hit the SAT prep forums, work an hour every day, and pwn that annoying test. By the way, it would be nice if you told us your ECs.

Can i still retake the SATs and send them in time for RD?? I was under the impression I couldnt..

You get January for the SAT, and Jan. +Feb. for the ACT. Take an ACT practice test, and then see what you score. If it's about 30, I suggest taking the ACT twice, and using Jan. for a bio retake. If you don't do well on the ACT, just take the Jan. SAT. Check each college's policy and see what you can do.

One last question, do i have to designate these schools as recipients when I register? or can i wait to see my score before sending them to the schools... I am so rusty on the SAT im scared my score will go down
  • CardgamesCardgames Posts: 285Registered User Junior Member
I suggest designating the schools, in order to insure that they receive the scores as soon as possible. Also, notify the colleges that you're retaking the test, so they'll know to wait for the scores. Bah, don't worry about rusting. I took my second SAT about a year after my first with minimal studying, and my score rose by 150 points (growing up kind of helped me). Just be serious about improving.

Thank you for all the help. Hopefully I can break 2100 I intend to put in 1-2 hours a night from now until the test.

A few more opinions maybe? I appreciate it, and I will chance back!

You should have applied to Cornell, they disregard the Writing score. You would have a 1370 (M+V) which is decent score.

I have visited Cornell and I realized that it wasn't a fit for me. But yes I know they don't look at writing. :(

anyone else? My GC is saying i have a shot mostly because of my socioeconomic background. I'd really appreciate more opinions because I feel like she is just blowing smoke.

Yeah, you have gotten into two fine schools already so don't think that everything is over if you son't get into the other three. Too have a shot at any of the 3, however, you will definitely need to bring up that score. I think you can do it. 100 points is no big deal, believe me. If you work hard you can even bring it up 200-300 points which would give you a great shot. I have seen that improvement. Get on your grind, thats all I can say. Now is make or break time. Good Luck!
