Can I get into NYU Early Decision?

I am a senior in High School and I was wondering whether I could get into NYU. I want to pursue Journalism/Comm and study either Arabic, Linguistics, Literature, or Poly Sci! It's been my dream school but it is so expensive! Here are my stats:

HS gpa: 3.9 (weighted) with mostly AP and IB courses, full course load (no time for a lunch period + extra class in the morning), among the top 10%

SATS: CR-670, Writing- 710, Math- 640= 2020
SAT IIs- USH- 780, Chem- 640
IB Diploma Candidate- (Psych SL- 7, Environmental SL- 6, Math SL, History HL, English HL, French HL)

Ap Tests- US History (5), English Lit (4, self study), Psych (4, self study)

Co-President of French club
President of Indian Youth Community
President of Vestal Voices (advanced choir)
Editor in chief of school newspaper
NHS Member

I have interned in the Communications/Marketing dept. of a local hospital system
Intern at Fox 40 news (Local News Station)
National Student Leadership Conference for Mass Comm and Journalism

Taught English and Math in an underprivileged village in India for a week
Our town had a big flood last year so I helped clean up with that
Concession Stand worker for football games
Participate in Relay for Life
Held and participated in dances/plays for Indian Cultural days

I hope you guys can help me figure out whether I can do this! Thanks

I'd say you have an ok shot at getting in ED. Your GPA is good, but yout SAT score is a bit weak for Stern. Great EC's, so that'll help.

The one thing to consider is finances: can your family afford this? You need to talk to them, because if you apply ED, you must matriculate (with rare exceptions). NYU is notorious for horrible aid, and with your stats, you're not likely to get much in merit aid. You may end up having to pay close to $40,000-$50,000 a year. Make sure you can afford that.

I wouldn't be apply to Stern. If I do Journalism, I'd apply to CAS and if I do Comm, I'd apply to Steinhardt.

My family doesn't qualify for financial aid but if I do ED and get in, I figured that I could spend the rest of the year applying for scholarships.

Whoops, there was a thread right by yours about Stern so I must have mixed them up. Great chance for CAS ED.

What's your uw gpa? If its a 3.5 or higher then you have a good shot. I wouldn't ED though...do you really want to take out 60k/yr just to study journalism? O.o

Yeah it is definitely above 3.5. My school doesn't have huge curves. And I would couple journalism with a different major, in fact, it's required at NYU.

Have you decided if you're applying to CAS or Steinhardt?

I will be applying to steinhardt. I have man notable leadership roles: President of Vestal Voices (select choir), Co-president of the Indian Youth Community, Co-president of French club (treasurer during junior year), Editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, and lead attorney of my Mock Trial team (two years in a row). Also things that were not included above are that I am a volunteer with the Obama campaign locally and I am in a super-selective Jazz choir.

I am actually ranked 51/329 and have a 97 weighted GPA. I don't think that should be too much of a problem.

Hey! Thanks for the post! I think you have a really good shot ED for CAS and an even better shot for Steinhardt. You would love journalism at NYU.. one of my classes at Precollege was journalism and it was such an amazing course. I just took my last SATs that I can submit for ED today... I don't feel that great about it /: I really hope if I apply LSP though maybe they can look past it a little bit haha. But yea I think you have a very good shot at this point especially for ED.. I'm jealous lol
