Yes, you are right to think about class rank, but I think this still makes you no worse than 50/50 ED and probably more like 66% or so.
In addition to ED, you have some things going for you: (1) decent SATs, (2) in state, (3) male (an assumption based on handle) and WM appears to have slightly easier standards for males based on last few years admissions records (26% v. over 40% last year), (4) a very strong HS that W&M is probably very familiar with (I am from NOVA and per Naviance last year my kids' HS had students in at least the 20th percentile getting accepted there, and (5) really good ECs.

If you've explained the grade drop, I think the 2 C's might not matter. You've got a bunch of EC's, your SAT score is good, but your class rank is pretty low for WM. Also, why aren't you disclosing your unweighted GPA? Is it not required for WM?

Thanks for your guys' responses
I actually have no idea what my undisclosed GPA is. the school doesn't provide it. if it puts it into any perspective, there are some people in my school with 4.5 GPAs.
do you guys know how much weight an interview would hold for W&M if it went very well?

Well in most cases I think colleges would question your drop as a sign of "hmm he can breeze through the easy years, but can he handle school when things get tough?" However in your case you did mention that you had a family member pass away. Colleges take this into account. Although they say you can never use it as an "excuse" you at least showed that you were able to pick yourself back up. Class ranking I'm not real sure what to say. I go to a school in Northern Virginia that doesn't' do class ranking (not TJ). However its still pretty competitive as I see lots of kids get into schools like Cornell, Wash U, Northwestern etc. If your school is particularly competitive then your class rank won't look as bad. I still think WM is a match for you. You have an incredible amount of leadership positions.

Don't worry dude I have a lot of friends who submitted ED to WM like you. What major did you apply for? One of my friends applied for Computer Science which is really not in demand there. If you applied for an unpopular major it could help you out a bit

I went IR, Medieval&Renaissance Studies, and Linguistics
I was hoping the latter two were undemanded. I had to say IR cuz my interview made it really obvious lol

Hey! It's me again, I read your supplement essay and saw your chance thread.
You have good SATs which no one really mentioned, and if you fill out the part of the common app that lets you explain any hardships and explain your junior year grades (I think that on the common app, I home I'm not getting it confused with Apply Texas) and I think that your chances are really good.
As long as your recs are good, and I read your essay, you stand a good chance- your junior year grades shouldn't get in your way.
Also explain some legit extracurricular experiences that you spend time doing- like debate. (I do it also!) have you been to districts, regionals, state, or possibly NFL nationals? If so, be sure to really express it on your app.

Oh! And your interview. Interviews are REALLY important to these schools, so that helps also! Unlike me, who blew her GW interview... Haha

hello again! I hope my recs were good. I talked about my EC in the EC blurb on the common app and a lot in the interview (policydebate/extempspeech). ive been to regionals for speech, and ive been to a few national tournaments for policy as well. i've listed all my awards ive won on the common app.
I really hope this interview was helpful. I know that 80% (if not more) don't do interviews, so idk how helpful and significant it would actually end up being.

Yep yep yep, I think you have a great shot. Do you know the website parchment.com?
It is what I use to gauge my chances (i have the same username on that site). I would really recommend taking some time and setting up a profile, It takes a lot into consideration (like ED/EA, Interviews, Legacy, Awards, along with the typical stuff like academics) and gives you a percent chance of getting in (then a margin of error). Its pretty interesting... especially since I really wont be able to think about anything other than college until im accepted somewhere haha.
