The whole point of extracurriculars is to prove that you're not just a NERD and that's what most colleges are looking for. What I don't get is that some people exaggerate their success on their activities when writing the resume, or hide certain aspects of their activities they don't want to show. It's sorta like using the truth to lie.

Wow~This is my first time to CC, and the talk here is so hot , I am really empressed by that.
As for me, I think a good EC is different to every one as not every one will have the opportunities to participate in the great events, howerver, you need to tell what "good, excellent" thing you learn from the EC, this is just the essence of EC, so ,take care of yourself~

I don't mean to interject my own EC's, I was just wondering how valuable being preisdent of your senior class is.

Especially if the senior class contains 606 students....

I'm talking about the value of this when applying to schools such as: Yale, Dartmouth, Georgetown, NYU, Harvard, Tufts, Brown, Boston College, and Rutgers.

Unfortunately, nowadays, being president of your senior class doesn't stand out among those schools that you listed.

Just wondering, how do my EC's look?

Varsity Tennis, elected co-captain for this upcoming senior year
LINK (leadership that helps freshman) 1 year
Interact- Vice Pres. in the club for 2 years elected vp for upcoming year
Diversity- Vice Pres. in the club for 2 years elected vp for upcoming year
Becca's Closet (community service that provides dresses for those who need them)- secretary, 2 years
STARS Teen Leader(teaches the message Students Today Aren't Ready for Sex to 6ths graders) 3 years
Newspaper Section Editor - in the class for 2 years, editor for one.
Yearbook Section Editor- one year
Model United Nations- one year plus upcoming
Local Peer Court Volunteer- 50+ hours
Volunteer at the children's museum 40 hours
Will be on the Mayor's Youth Advisory board for this upcoming senior year.
National Honors Society
Global Awareness to Action Club 2 years.

Oh when I say 2 years or 3 years, I'm including this upcoming senior one, is that how it's counted?

Is there anything I need to do? Anything I need to emphasize in my essay? I'm looking to get into Berkeley, ivy leagues, etc.

I agree with smart.cookie, while those probably can get you into Berkeley, I believe that Ivy league schools prefer someone who is very dedicated to what he or she enjoys. Anyone can be taht guy that joins 20 clubs, but isn't a passionate member of any of them.

Exactly. As for me, most of my ECs (internships, clubs, sports, community service) revolve around running and writing, hence "runningwriter." Its good to be diverse with your ECs but you must be somewhat focused. Finding the balance between the two is what most people struggle with.

Also, I am the founder and editor-in-chief of my school's literary magazine. How signifcant is that? I started it the second week of my freshman year (because it was something I planned over the summer). I hear that being an editor is almost generic nowadays, but what about being the founder of it, especially because its a publication.

I am afraid that my ECs seem weak. The main thing that I do is teach kids karate (with a black belt btw). This is the strongest part of my ECs. (I do some other community service work) Is it not strong enough though? (Ironic question )

I did win a gold medal in karate once. KIYAH-- ^^
