| Stop playing the race card
Why is it that when some people post their "chances" threads someone always has to come in with the "well if your black/hispanic/any minority....you'll get in". I would really appreciate it if it some people would stop using the race card like having a 1/659 ranking. It doesn't make people feel good when you do it. Please stop.

Sadly, race still is an issue. A black person who is ranked *gasp* number two out of 1000 will probably get into Harvard, whereas a white person with a *gasp* number two out of 1000 ranking will not. Thanks to affirmative action.
Until society adjusts the educational inequality that exists in this society (not to mention the few racist admissions officers who won't let anyone with a non-WASP name in) and affirmative action can be done away with, those of who it doesn't help will just have to survive at such terrible schools as Cornell, U PENN, and Michigan.

I don't think its right, Why is it suprising to see a african american with really good grades? Why can't minorites get good grades? It shouldnt be a boost or a better chance of getting it, It should be equal with any other race on this earth. yeah tbanks for taking the time to understand the concept of my thread.

No one disputes that there are really smart URMs out there. The harsh truth is that many top universities need to take URMs to increase their diversity and will often cut them some slack for having slightly worse grades or scores. Is this morally right? I don't believe so, but affirmative action does exist and should be taken into account in chances threads. Ignoring it skews the predictions that the posters are asking for.

It is very capable URMs that are getting into top schools. There are scores of smart URMs graduating every year from the Country's top prep schools--Andover and Exeter to Harvard-Westlake and Brearly. There are a growing number of smart legacy URMs. Ivies reject over 75% of URM applicants. No one is just walking in for being black!

universities have affirmative action to increase diversity. Having more diversity will make the university look better and people will praise them for it. It's all about reputation. If you have a problem with it, why don't you send a complaint letter to the admission boards, instead of complaining to people on the internet who have no power, only opinions.

How will the get a realistic guess if they don't list enthicity? It's a key element in the admission dicission.

BBecker, someone who posts a "chances please" thread but without listing ethnicity is simply naive, especially since most major schools all practice affirmitave action.

It is necessary to post your "race" or ethnic group, but it is extremely irresponsible, and all too common, for posters on CC to blow off that applicant because he or she is an under-represented minority and say "Oh, you'll definitely get in 100% to [blank]" (I have seen this in another thread).
BBecker, I honestly do understand your sentiment here. Although most CCers are just trying to be accurate, although its a slippery slope, many posters are being deliberately dismissive and irresponsible toward people who really do want help with colleges. This is just another form of discrimination, despite the positive nature of the remark.

People can stop posting it - but it doesn't make it any less true.
I agree with you - it is discriminatory and offensive - but not because of the posters, it's because of the colleges who enact affirmative action.

I so give up, because the rest of the people think I'm just wasting my breathe. the issue is here not at the admission offices, you guys use race to determine someones possible admission decision. Maybe that is how colleges do it but people are so arrogant about it. I am a minority myself and to always be asked my race when trying to ask someone my chances is annoying. I want to have good chances because i am a great student or because i was president of a certain club for four years not because of where my parents are from. But nevermind, Ignorance is truly bliss.

and your not understanding our point...IT DOESNT MATTER WHAT WE SAY IN HERE!!!...THATS NOT GONNA CHANGE THE FACT THAT COLLEGES WANT DIVERSITY!...SO IF YOU DONT WANT A CORRECT EDUCATED GUESSTIMATE FOR YOUR CHANCES THEN DONT POST CHANCES THREADS AT ALL BECAUSE YOUR GONNA BE IGNORING A HUGE PART OF THE ADMISSIONS PROCESS.
