USNA Candidate. How am I doing?

Hi,

I just got accepted to both the West Point and Annapolis summer seminars. I am a fairly well rounded student with a 5.346 GPA and a 1240 on my SAT (a little rough but I am hoping to improve when I take it again in october)... I missed out on the June 7th SAT because I will be at the Annapolis Seminar.

My schedule this year was:
AP Calc AB
AP Physics B
AP English Language and Composition
AP American History
Spanish IV
Wrestling (Advanced)
Jazz Band

Next Year:
AP Calc BC
AP Chemistry
AP Physics C
AP Spanish
AP Government
AP Economics
AP Literature

I am captain of my Varsity Wrestling team and co-captain of my baseball team. I also run cross-country (varsity but not competitive).

How am I doing? I really am hoping to get into Annapolis, it is my first choice and I want to be a midshipmen. Any suggestions?

I am also worried about my SAT score, I want to improve it but lack time to do it unless I take it in October which is after the deadline of my Nomination request.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

"A little rough?" Buddy, I hope for your sake that the 1240 is on the 1600 scale. If not, that's not "a little rough" -- (not to be rude, but) that's bloody awful!

Also, what scale is your 5.346 GPA on?

The number of APs on your schedule for next year scares me. Thats more APs than my entire school offers.

Thats gotta be 16 based on his schedule. People taking AP's up the wazoo physically can't get 1240 out of 2400

hah...yea it was an 1880 out of 2400. I took the SAT in Dec. but definately wouldn't know or care about this site if I was lower than a 400 in reading. But thanks, I take it either way... I don't feel AP's don't count for much, other than your weighted GPA (i'm not sure of what scale I'm on other than I know my AP's get me 6 credits a pop).

Tique,

You're doing alright so far. Your AP's and your sports are really good. That SAT is probably OK, but could use some work. If you get up to a 1300, I think you'll be set. Find me in the Naval Academy forum, or get some perspective from the other Naval Academy posters. A lot of people in these parts don't know what a hassle going to one of the service academies can be just from an admissions standpoint. Summer seminar for both programs will give you a little bit of a leg up, so come to NASS and kick some @$$. You sound like a candidate I'd go after.

I think you have things mostly covered. In what other ECs do you participate? The academies used to have a formula they used for all the things outside grades and standardized scores (not sure if they do any longer). That would take into account sports as well as clubs/leadership positions.

I'm President of my Junior Statesman Chapter and Vice President of my Science Honor Society. Placed second in the nation ocean sciences bowl and other than that a lot of clubs but minimal participation. I believe you're right in that they put some weight on leadership positions.
