Chance a Future Neurosurgeon! (and future B.Sc Neuroscience double concentration)

I’m in a program called Early French Immersion- where your fundamental courses, except a few like English/Math and certain tiny electives, are all taught in French language and require you to write in French language/ speak French all the time in the classroom. This is my 3rd year in Early French immersion… lets just say it pwned me because I had to learn from scratch French language. We do not rank students (quoted by guidance counselor). APs are only offered in grade 12 through prerequisites taken in previous years. No one is allowed to skip prereqs.

GPA (cumulative)
4.0

SAT1- took it today i have no clue...

Extracurricular/Volunteer (Main Ones):

• Head Coordinator for Peer-Helpers. We do things like School Famine for 30 hours, to raise money for world vision famine struck children in Africa, Battered Women Shelter fund raising etc. Also we organize the grade 9 day, and assist in helping the Merivale High School Community all the time. Raise lots of money.
• Junior Achievement- Vice President of Human Resources. We had the best Business Plan in the whole of Ottawa District School Board. We learn about the real world of business, and research a unique/original product and make it and sell it. 50% of profit was donated to Ottawa Food Bank.
• Live It Up- Head Coordinator, we promote healthy living within our high school, and participate in district board events that involve active living. We show how to eat right, reduce the risk of heart failure, show and inform the students about the foods they encounter everyday and the benefits of them.
• Reach for the Top- Academic Trivia Team- we are ranked number 1 in the city, I’m a starter; also I am the secretary for them (making sure we are organized). We made it to provincials 2 years in a row, and TV rounds this year finishing in the quarterfinals.
• United Colours- I am part of an Executive Board, we have no distinguished leader, just the Executive Board of about 4 People, which control the club. We have the Best multicultural Show each year, and have been in the newspaper for it. Participated in the multicultural show myself, and supervised all the performers. We promote unity and inform the youths of the many races/religions/ cultures seen in our school that we represent daily. Most of Profit goes to charity.
• One School to Another- this is a new Club that I decided to start at my school this year. It was a volunteer project I started on my own in my basement, collecting school resources like pens/pencils/lined paper/ binders etc. and sending them to third world countries where under funded third world country schools can give them out. I am the club founder/ President, and it is in association with peer-helpers, but is a purely individual Club.
• I have a total of 1516 hours of community service. 154 hours was used as being a student teacher during summer for elementary summer academic programs at Montessori Academy for the Enriched. Combined hours of 1292 in 4 year span was spent in the soup kitchen at my temple. My supervisor recently passed away so I will not be able to get a recommendation. This was an awesome volunteer experience as I was intrigued by the life experiences these simple folk who come to the soup kitchen for food went through. 1292 hours well spent. Also am going to be clocking well over 700 hours at the hospital with neurosurgery by October.
• I am also being mentored by a neurosurgeon- Dr.Alghaity, who is head resident at the hospital. He is training me in theory of neurosurgical sciences; I’ve watched multiple neurosurgeries taken place while in the room (not the theatre room above the actual OR, but in the OR itself, looking directly at the patients). Under him, I’ve been doing on-calls with him, and plain living the life of a neurosurgeon. This is usually during co-op and after co-op. The mentorship program happened during co-op but is a separate relationship, it wasn’t given to me by co-op at all, I got it on my own. I am currently doing research on rare case studies found in the neurosurgical field, and using multiple cases to prove it. My mentor and his colleagues are verifying this and I will be presenting it at the Daily Academic Residence Day for all the neurosurgeons at the hospital.
• I am on the high school basketball team. Won Most Improved Player statistically. Played competitive basketball outside of school.
• Did boxing competitively during grade 11, took most of my time. Finished with a record of 8 and 0… coach past away recently and the gym has been shutdown due to the financial cost burden on his wife.
• Was part of the Rugby team in grade 10, could not do it in grade 11 due to boxing. West City Division Champions.
• Student Council- OSSSA representative. We are associated with Student Council, but OSSSA is the Ontario Secondary School Student Association, and so it is ran through all the high school’s student council committees, but it is an individual association as well and has high ranked positions within OSSSA.
• I have been recruited to become a Mentor myself to a troubled youth in grade 9. I will be helping him academically and will be assisting him with psychological needs and emotional support. I am very excited to be helping someone at this level, and it seems I can relate to him so it will be good.

Work Experience:

I am currently a record labeled signed DJ for a small company originated in Ottawa named Robbin’Hoodz Production Company. We are a versatile company, having members that range from DJs to music producers and graphic/album artists. We are also connected with a small record label in Sweden. I am also an independent DJ as well, self-employed, usually earning 200$-400$ for each party I DJ at during the weekends usually Saturdays and Sundays of the Month. Just got recruited for professional DJing by a big company in Ottawa called PMEntertainment- doing requested weddings and other functions/soirées. Will be signing with them as well.

I am also a self-employed tutor, charging 5$ and hour to tutor kids in the IB program (mainly) with IB Chemistry, Physics, Biology, English, and Math. I tutor for usually 2 hours a day, and currently help about 6 students daily. I recently got recruited by Kumon Teaching centre and have been offered a teaching position in Higher Level Mathematics (Gr.11 to first year university curriculum). Teaching mainly calculus.

Summer Programs:

This summer I will be heading to Shad Valley- Shad International -a 1-month program at a university to promote education and application of knowledge in science, business, and technology. We will be getting lectured by the top entrepreneurs of Canada, PhD professors in all the 3 fields listed in the latter. We will be conducting product research and do a project that we will enter in competition and see which Shad valley university campus comes up with the most efficient manner in helping humanity. A sponsored company who sponsors the Shad Valley Program will then construct this product.

Pre-Pre-Medical Fellowship in Neurosurgery in India- SMS Med College/ Main Hospital in New Delhi, India. I was accepted and will be practicing underneath the head of the pediatric surgery department. He has personally interviewed me and allowed me to practice underneath him for 1 month in the summer and as well as winter break. I will be learning about the proper applied methods of neurosurgical science, and will be aiding him in priority three cases. I will be allowed to do certain tasks during the surgery on the patient, under strict supervision of the MD of course, and with proper training and theory before hand. This will allow me practical learning experience for neurosurgery. Most of the cases we will be doing are neurosurgical because his pediatric surgical concentration is neurosurgery.

Awards- Dont worry about it , i got enough.

Opinions will be appreciated.

Was kind of skeptical at first in placing this chance thread.

OO forgot what unis to chance for:

Stanford (Decided SCEA)
JHU (wanted ED, but guess now)
Harvard
UC schools...

im a US californian Citizenship, also canadian citizenship, and indian citizenship. Studying in canada currently, ontario...

So are you considered an in-state applicant for Stanford?

If so, then contingent on your SAT scores( and your SAT II'S!Where are those?!), I would say you have a very good chance, especially because you are applying early.

Your application, I must say, is a refreshing change from all the other math/science applicants and I feel that college adcoms will see it that way as well. You have a good GPA( although you haven't told us about any of the classes you have taken aside from the french language component- how are they compared in rigor to US AP/IB level courses? That is very important!) and what really stands out to me are your EC's. You've done a lot of humnitarian work( which I love because sometime budding engineers and doctors don't get it that they can do other things beside just math/science concentrated activities!!) and your mentorship sounds quite unique and interesting- be careful how you highlight that because you don't want it to come off as just shadowing a doctor which would diminish the appeal of its value.

Neurosurgery/medical field is really stiff and you will be facing competition from many strong applicants so do keep that in mind. But I would venture to say that you have a really great shot at JHU RD as well.

By the way, i dont shadow the doctor, i am gettin trained by the doctor... i handle 2 patients a week, doing what we call "daily rounds" and explain to them pre-surgery/post-surgery related items of agenda... i also explain the neurosurgical procedures they go through and also options for other routes... I also help examine MRIs and CAT scans... CAT=CT for those who arent up to par in the medical lingo..

Hello??? In state for Stanford???? Stanford is a private school and being in state doesn't help!

There's nothing anyone can tell you without knowing class rank and SATs. Also whether or not your school has advanced classes and if you took the hardest classes.

Stanford may be a private school but if you look at their applicant matriculation, roughly 40% are in-state while 60% are out of state. Clearly, there is a huge Calfornia pool- but it doesn't make it any easier for California applicants by any means because there is such huge competition and it is virutally impossible to get into Stanford from some areas but the stats do show a slight pull towards california residents. This is drastically different from Ivies( from which most pull about 1-3% from the home state) and other top schools.

I also wasn't just restricting it to California residency. I simply meant it's just good he has a US citizenship because it's so much harder for internationals.

Well, then with a 2250 plus, you should have the same 9% chance at Harvard and Stanford as all the other "qualified" applicants. Look at it this way, half the class is hooked so the acceptance rate for the unhooked is only about 3%. So with a strong SAT and GPA an unhooked candidate probably has about a 9% chance.
