hello MC1991. You know how we always read in cc that ivies are a reach for almost everyone? You are one of those applicants who define the reason why the word "almost" is in that statement, and why it can't be just plain everyone.

hi i'm not the original poster but im in a similar situation (i go to a private day school in NYC, though, not a boarding school in new england) my academics are roughly as strong as MC1991's but i have strong donor connections/legacies at harvard.

i really want to know how much legacy/benefactor status helps, any ideas?

sry for hijacking your thread
but how much would having your YALE professor for neurosci internship writing a letter of recommendation help if you are applying to yale? (Yale is used as an arbitrary example)

Yeah, I think the OP is the just about the closest thing to a definite acceptance as anyone's ever going to get, I just hope he knows how enormously privileged he is to have those kind of connections

like others have said, I don't think you need to worry about admission. keep up similar grades, don't get arrested, and you're in.

at least the privileged work hard?

Hey, OP: If you get into these schools, which you likely will, don't let yourself think that your acceptance is only a result of your "connections." Your connections in conjunction with your great stats and accomplishments are what make everyone on here so sure that you'll get in.

if you boost your SAT score (if you match your psat score) you should get into Yale.

It depends how many kids of loaded people they want to take. Your profile is underwhelming for Yale EA as is. There are certainly more qualified legacies out there. But it depends if Yale wants to be more meritocratic during the peak '09 year. Can they handle doling out rejections to some big donors for a couple years and sit on their multibillion endowment? That's really the question here. I don't think anyone can adequately chance you.

Thanks for the input, guys.

Recognizing full well the competitiveness in Ivy admission, I'm not sure it's fair to say my profile is "underwhelming." I think that I, along with many other students who may end up rejected, am qualified to study at schools like Yale.

The obstacle as I understand it is that there are far too MANY qualified students, each of whom with adequately "whelming" applications.

MC1991, i dunno what milessmiles is talking about. like Poseur said, your stats alone are competitive for Ivies (if your school/peers/classes as hard and you say they are. underwhelming? lol.

bad news for the rest of us if there are really "certainly more qualified legacies out there." i dont know any. the rich kids at our school don't do very much, and i don't think they're in the same league of donor status

good luck!

also, like highschooler09 said, you may want to look at a few safeties. add maybe Trinity, BC, or Conn college if you're looking for a local backup.

If you're at Andover I'm crying tonight.

Because I'm going to Andover this fall and I realize that as a unhooked Indian international (possibly worst combo ever, lol) I'll be competing against people like you who not only have amazing hooks (URM, legacy, athlete) but are very smart and have amazing stats etc. So never feel like you got in with legacy solely. Because to get such good grades, take such courses etc at such a school with a great set of standardized scores, kudos to you!

And I'm hopefully going to take European History this fall as a soph so what's it like (assuming you're at Andover...)?

Could you PM me how you felt it was?
