What are my chances of getting into UNC??

Hi! UNC has been my first choice for a really long time and I was hoping that I could get some feedback on whether or not I have a shot at getting in. I know it's EXTREMELY competitive for out of staters, which is why I'm a bit concerned. I'm from Maryland, but have been going to NC since I was born and LOVE it.

ACT Score
(I retook the ACTs a week ago and am pretty sure my scores went up. The first time I took it, I was not feeling well and ended up spiking a fever midway through the test).
Composite: 31
English: 35
Math: 31
Reading: 30
Science: 27
Writing: 8

GPA (weighted): 3.971
*Course load ranked as most difficult*
*I go to a well-known Private school. They do not rank students.*

Junior year AP classes:
-AP Calculus AB (scored a 4 on exam)
-AP English 11 (scored a 3 on exam)
-AP U.S. History (scored a 4 on exam)
*also took honors physics*

Senior year AP classes:
-AP Calculus BC
-AP U.S. Government
-AP English 12
-AP Biology

Awards/Recognition:
-Beatitude Award (50+ service hours)
-Principals List (9, 10, 11)
-First Honors (11, 12)
-Most Improved Player (cross country, grade 11)
-Varsity Letterman (cross country, 10, 11, 12)
-Bronze for National Latin Exam (9)
-Honors in Latin 2 (10)
-Academic Excellence (9, 10, 11)
-First Overall for Becca's Run 5k 2008 (11)

Extracurriculars:
-Varsity Cross Country (10, 11, 12)
-Montgomery County Road Runners Member (9, 10, 11, 12)
-Team Sarah Montgomery County Leader/Team Leader (11, 12)
-40 Days for Life Administrator/Online Coordinator (11, 12)
-National Honors Society (11, 12)
-Madeleva Scholar (9, 10, 11, 12)
-Prom Committee (11)
-Interfaith Clothing Center Volunteer (11, 12)
-K.E.E.N. Volunteer (10, 11, 12)
-SCL Tutor/Volunteer (10, 11, 12)
-Student Ambassador (10, 11, 12)

Oh, and I wrote pretty good essays that were reviewed by my counselors, parents, etc. And I also have very good recommendation letters. I am also a white female.

One last thing...I also applied to University of Maryland, Vanderbilt, University of Virginia, University of North Carolina-Wilmington, Villanova, and Texas Christian. What are your thoughts on those schools and my chances at getting in?

Less than 5% of UNC-CH is OOS. Those scores are right at the 75% level. Even if you were in the top 1% of your class it would be a big reach.

Your ACT should be good for UNC, although your weighted GPA could be higher. Like the poster above said, getting into UNC OOS is awfully hard. If your letters and essays are as good as you say (your EC's and awards look great BTW) I'd say you have a shot.

Thanks for chancing me earlier!

I think it's a reach. Not the most absurd one, but still difficult. I'm OOS as well and I have many friends applying with similar stats. However, you seem to be a strong candidate and if its not UNC, I'm sure you'll end up somewhere great.

UNC's freshman class is actually 14% OOS.

You have a shot, I wouldn't say a great one though. Definitely apply but know it's a reach.

I think you have good chances at all your ther palces. You will certainly wind up at a good school; if UNC does not work out, it is not the end of the world.

I am confident that you have an excellent shot at UNC. And by the way, UNC is 18% OOS, not 5%. Good Luck!

I think you have a pretty good shot. People are not realizing that you go to a competitive private school, and no offense, but some of the people from private schools that I met are pretty mediocre students but got in because of their prestigious preparatory schools (NJ/MD kids). Did you go to Georgetown Prep or like an all girls private school (Garrison Forest)?

My friend had a 32-34 ACT for UNC-CH and Vanderbilt (ranked #9, 4.9 W GPA, most advanced courseload/ rewards/ etc) and was deferred then wait-listed (she did EA). Eventually she made it off the wait-list in May, but committed to Vanderbilt. My point is that it's very competitive and there is a chance that the same process would happen to you, I know a lot of out of state applicants are waitlisted and then make it off, but really late (like May-June).

I think you're in Maryland, Villanova, TCU and UNC-Wilmington. UVA is another spotty school for out of state admissions, sometimes even harder than UNC-Chapel Hill. Best of luck, I hope you get in and die a Tarheel,

It's a great school, I love it! It's a play hard, work harder environment so get ready for fun times but a lot of studying, though it depends on your major; Pre-Med and Business are very demanding while Dramatic Arts and Journalism/ Communication are lighter loads as well as other liberal art majors (Political Science, History, etc.).

I go to Holy Cross. I totally know what you mean about private school kids sometimes being mediocre students. There are a ton of private schools in this area that are over-priced finishing schools, but our school has a decent reputation on that front. Thanks for the advice
