Philosophy Major

Hi! I'm very interested in both Philosophy and Williams, so my question is how do these two interact? Is the department good? How are the professors? Is the course load heavy? How is the graduate school admission rates like? The "Philosophical Gourmet" mentions Amherst numerous times, but not Williams. Is it just because the latter is modest?

Nadash, I was hoping that someone else would answer you as my information is really third hand. One of my son's close friends was a double major philosophy and English. He said the philosophy department was very strong.

Thanks for the reply anyway! Heh. The other thread related to philosophy in this forum is quite lacking in information. =(

I am thinking about a double major in philosophy and I though I don't start until fall, I think philosophy at the top LAC's are great--mainly because of the interaction you get with professors. I took several philosophy classes at a large public research university and the experience was very "soak and regurgitate." I think LAC's, especially williams, will give you an enriching experience filled with a lot philosophical discussion and attention from your professors.

The students I know who have taken philosophy classes at Williams have liked the courses -- and professors -- a lot. Because the class size is often limited to fewer than 20, it may happen that more students than expected enroll in the preferred classes (or with the appealing professors), so that alternate selections sometimes need to be made.
