Williams Chances

I'm really interested in Williams! It seems like a great, challenging school.

I plan on raising my ACT score: I took the test the first time not knowing ANYTHING about its format (I earned a composite score of 30), but now I have a book that I'm using to study. I took the SATs twice, but I found that my scores were average (600 to 690 for each component) and I was better-suited towards the ACT. I would really prefer to NOT take the SATs again.

Do you think that my NOT playing a varsity/junior varsity sport in high school will effect my admissions chances? I have been an active dancer for almost 15 years.

Thank you for all of those that respond, and best wishes to all of you!

Pink, Using the ACT instead of the SATI is fine, but please bear in mind that you will still have to submit two SATII's.

Not playing a varsity sport will NOT affect your chances. Dance is an excellent EC for Williams. You should submit a performance tape with your application. See instructions under "peer and arts evaluation." http://www.williams.edu/admission/ap.../Peer_Arts.pdf

Your dance resume which should centralize all information regarding your major EC: for example, a personal statement, a list of accomplishments and achievements, classes, an additional recommendation from an instructor or mentor, one or two (no more!) media articles about your performances

It's hard to tell from your very long list of activities what your #2 EC would be. You should condense and edit to focus on what you really care about (in addition to dance). Your essays and recommendations should reinforce favorite actitivies.

Thanks! I've done some more research, and from what I can gather, Williams doesn't accept the ACT in lieu of the SAT. True?

Where did you learn that? The Williams admissions website says
Quote:
All applicants must take either the SAT or the ACT (American College Testing Program exam), plus any two SAT Subject Tests of the applicant's choice. Students taking the ACT must also submit the optional Writing Test.
(confirming what Momrath said above)

Hmmmm, maybe I'm remembering incorrectly. I thought I saw in some college book a "N/A" next to the SAT section. Maybe I'm wrong! I sure hope so, because I only plan on submitting my ACT to colleges.

When you say, "Maybe I'm wrong!" it sounds as though you're doubting the information Momrath and I provided you, including information directly from the college's website. If you are skeptical of the information on the college's own website, perhaps you ought to just call the admissions office.

As momrath and nceph have advised you, Williams is fine with the ACT (plus writing) instead of the SAT, but you will also need to submit two SAT II's.

I was at an information session at Williams this morning. The admissions officer said -- not once, not twice, but three times -- that either the SAT OR ACT may be submitted. However, you still need to submit the results of two SAT subject tests of YOUR CHOOSING.
