Well it's for juniors who got it. they fly you in for the weekend to tour Williams (all expense paid). sounds pretty cool.

Daughter got an email today. Is this a diversity weekend? Or is it based on test scores? She will probably apply - she is interested in their art program

I think it's for low income students, such as me, so yea, diversity.

I saw that the application asks for family income and includes this statement:

"Please note that preference is given to students that demonstrate financial need."

My URM son w/high PSAT scores received an invitation, but he probably wouldn’t qualify on the low-income front so I’m not sure if he’ll apply. He hadn’t considered Williams before, and a quick look at their stats indicates it would be a real reach for him considering his so-so GPA.

Good luck to all who are applying.

I would say apply, I applied and am a member of the Class of 2013, and I've fallen in love with it!
Basically, I'd say before ruling it out, your son should definitely come for a visit. You'll either love it or hate it, and I knew it would be a fantastic place to go to college the second I set foot on campus.
Even with a so-so GPA, high test scores, great EC's, demonstration of passion/intellectualism/creativity, and URM status will help your son get into Williams.

Okay, ChandlerBing, you’ve got my attention and I’m intrigued. Would you care to comment further about what sold you on Williams?

It's really hard to describe in words: there's this intangible factor to it. Williams obviously provides a top-notch education with top-notch facilities and resources, but it's really just the vibe of the place, the vibrance yet quaintness of the campus, and the extremely strong sense of community that drew me to it. I love the slight quirkiness of the campus culture (Purple Cows, anyone?) and also love the down-to-earth nature of everything. People are there to truly learn and absorb themselves into a world of academica and personal growth, and view it as such rather than just a place where one goes before going off to grad school. While Williams is an EXCELLENT feeder to grad schools/med schools/law schools (it's number 5 only to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford), it provides its students with a unique education that encompasses more than just what they want to pursue professionally. Everyone at Williams is ecstatic to be at Williams, and excited to learn whatever it is they want to learn, and that's why I was sold on Williams!

    Whew! Hope that helped :)

I'm applying. Though I don't know much about Williams, I'd like to learn.

Thank you, ChandlerBing! That was helpful.

The quirkiness aspect might appeal to my son, so we'll explore further.

No problem, it's not an extremely quirky campus by any means, but it's got a nice balance.

Just a quick question: Does anyone know when decisions are announced? :)

Decisions should be announced the first week in September. And tomorrows the postmark deadline for applications for anybody who hasn't gotten them in
