"If I'm good enough for advanced standing, how can they reject me?" They reject hundreds of people with similar numbers of APs and IBs every year.

Dr. Avrah,

send it to your regional admission rep. On Yale's website go to "contact us" then "Staff Directory"- or something to that effect, then to internationals- if you're one- or your state if you're from the US and they'll have your regional reps name there.

I was deferred too... I'm so disappointed. I'm gonna send in two new essays, because looking back my essays really weren't that great... unfortunately, Yale won't let me replace the essays I already sent in, just add on to my profile.

BTW, could anybody tell me why I was deferred? I wanna know what I did wrong.

Academics:
SATs: 740CR-780M-770W (10 essay)
SAT2s: 750 Math2, 750 German, 730 Physics
First in my class of 78 at a public school where no one's ever even applied to Yale
National Merit Semifinalist
5 AP German, 5 AP US Govt, 4 AP Eng Lang, 4 AP Phys B
Yale Book Award / Bausch&Lomb Science Scholar

Extracirriculars:
Was a year-long foreign exchange student in Germany in 10th grade
Varsity cross country
President of this year's record-setting United Way (service) Club
Treasurer of Key Club
Founder of Model United Nations Club at my school
Winner of Rotary 4-Way Speech Contest
Academic Challenge Team (Top3- was on TV)

You're simply unlucky... just like the rest of us.

I was deferred and I'm also thinking about sending in another essay. My application essays were decent, but lackluster. My new one is really unique, but when I wrote it I'd already submitted my Yale application.
Would sending an additional essay help, or would it actually hurt, my chances?

imflying, from what i've heard, the admissions officers kind of get...annoyed. they'll read it, but begrudgingly.

As a general rule, would someone deferred at Yale have a better Regular Decision chance at Harvard or Yale?

You may have hit the nail on the head. You went to a high school with which Yale isn't familiar and has no experience. That may make it that much harder to "break in".

Plus with your credentials, I'd guess that there was a serious flaw in your application materials. Could it be the essays or recommendations?

I'm beginning to believe it is about the hook, as much as anything else.

There are so many well-qualified kids applying to these top schools that, without a hook, it is a crap shoot (irrespective of how great your stats are).

tarbe- is that true? that's my real concern. granted, i am a junior and still have to get those stats....but i'm worried that even if i do, i didn't do anything really outstanding. i mean i go to a small school in a relatively small town, so there really wasn't that much i could do. oh well, i've tried my hardest throughout high school, and i guess that's the best i can do.

i'm applying early to yale next year, and i'll probably get deferred. still, it's good to see what you guys are doing to remedy that situation before decisions come out march 31. all of you seem very well-qualified and good luck!
