There is no specific dress scene. It's like any place, but really once the temperatures start dropping more layers and layering is usual.

Most dont know how to dress. No one (except me that I've seen) wears Abercrombie, Hollister, American Eagle, etc...Some prep school kids look kind of funky with their red pants and polos, but that's just my opinion. Most kids however dress very plain and average...Think your high school honors classmates (running shoes with ugly jeans, skinny ass kids with tshirts that are slightly too big, no gelling of the hair, etc. BUT some do dress pretty cool with stylish clothes (GQ style or A&F, etc), but for the most part it's pretty rare and more the exception.

For girls: Few few girls even straighten their hair. It's kinda gross that they don't...I guess what differentiates a "hot" yale girl (hot yale girl= 7/10 rating of girls you see in the mall) from an ugly one is the fact that they are *slightly* prettier, straighten their hair, and dress cute (ie clothes that match). There are some very attractive girls here, by anyone's standard, but those are quite rare.

Overall, most people look just like the kids you took AP calc with in high school. Guys with no muscle (except athletes) and oversized tees and ugly pants, and girls who don't even bother to do their hair...

I'm sooooo glad to be home and be able to go out and see attractive people that dress well and groom themselves again lol

He just said that some of them don't match, are "plain and ordinary," or look like they came out of a spread from the Abercrombie catalog or GQ.

Hahaaa girls with straight hair! Gosh, dan, if I'd known it was that important to you I'd drop every single paper, project and social activity of mine just to sit and do my hair for two hours every day.

My friend made a very clever observation: you can tell the freshmen by the meticulous way of dress and degree of cleanliness. Come midterm time, we're all just sloshing around in unwashed Yale jogging pants and t-shirts psychadelically colored by express meals between exams. Midterms are the great equalizer.

Seriously, it's college. If you put too much thought or gel in your head about dressing nicey-nicey, I'm just going to assume you're a trust-fund kid nutjob and move on. And this comes from someone that can go from sloth to posh in 0.05 seconds if need be.

I think you just defended your position of sloppiness with a weak counterargument of: It's college, I'm supposed to be sloppy and CAN be "posh" but choose not to.

And I'm not saying people need to dress "nice" or gel their hair every time they go out to class. I'm just saying some of us, like me for instance, pride themselves on being able to wear fashionable clothes that looks good and does not look like my mom picked it out for me, and that my shirt fits snugly around my arms because of my frequent visits to the gym, all the while writing "every single paper, projects...social activities." You see, I'm the same as every other Yalie, I study and have a life like other kids on campus too.

I just like looking good at the same time. And there is no counterargument for not doing your hair. I mean, I, and a small percentage of kids on campus, can wear sweats and a t-shirt and make it look good...All I'm saying is that most people on campus don't. You don't need to "dress up" all the time...Just have some general cleanliness and good grooming habits (like straightening your hair and going tanning).

Sincerely,

Mr. 2010

Tanning? Dan, you wire me some money, I'll get right on it. Throw in some bucks for a whole pair of socks and undies, too :]

Please tell me dan is deliberate self-parody. Tanning is "general cleanliness and good grooming habits?" Nice to know that people are expected to deliberately put themselves at risk of skin cancer to satisfy your aesthetic desires. And if dan is actually serious, he's got to rank pretty high up on the arrogance meter, even by Yale standards (as well as being completely ridiculous).

Dude, Dan, do you come from Cali or Florida or something? You're in the northeast, only celebrities and wannabes actually go to tanning salons in New England.

The OP asked what dress was like at Yale. I gave an answer, and people got defensive about it, meaning I told the truth.

And I'm not a trust fund nutjob or a rich kid, I went to an inner city public school and then a crappy public high school, I worked my butt off to get to where I am. I'm friends with alot of kids who dont dress how I like. That doesn't mean they're bad people or anything...

I TOTALLY agree with Dan. Girls at Yale are always wearing sweaters and scarves and jeans which are like SO out-of-style. Like seriously, people here have their priorities way wrong...appearance is everything, and even at 9:30 AM it's important to look like you just got off your shift at A&F. I mean, one of my main goals before I graduate is to get a hot boyfriend who's going to work on Wall Street. I really want not to have to work so that I can go shopping like all day!

People at Yale have this weird perception that it's like your intelligence that determines success in life? It's soo cute, because I mean everyone knows that attractive well-dressed people make it so much farther in the real world, you know? I mean come on, Paris Hilton is way richer and more famous than Nancy Pelosi!

My roommate is so nasty...she wakes up so late in the morning before her 8:30 AM class that she only has time to shower and pull on clothes. I only have a 9:30 AM class but I wake up BEFORE her so I can shower and then exfoliate, blow dry and straighten my hair, retouch my nails (because everyone knows that chipped polish is SO 1980s, ew) and apply makeup. And then I try on a few different outfits because I don't want to wear the same thing I did two weeks ago, you know?

Oh my god, Dan, it's such a relief to know that someone else at Yale has their priorities straight!

Love Always,

Gnarly Yale Girl Who Doesn't Straighten Her Hair
