I'm going to attend the JSA Summer School on the campus of Yale
I'm from China.
Is there anybody here who will also go for JSA Yale this summer?
BTW, will this experience be an advantage if I later apply to Yale, Class of 2013?
Seems that very few international students esp. Asian students will take part in this activity..so a little bit lonely```
Is the summer school organized by JSA renowned in the US? Will I have many chances of talking to Yale professors face to face?

Ok. I did JSA Georgetown last year. I know it's not the same college but from what I understand they are fairly similar. I was just accepted to Yale EA in December.

No, you won't be given any preferential treatment by admins because you've attended this event. Yale, as does most colleges, likes to see that you were active in something that you're passionate about during your summer. However, they would be just as happy if you attended JSA Georgetown, Stanford, or any of the other ones. With that said, if you know that you're interested in Yale you might as well attend so that you can learn about the school and what it has to offer. There's no better way to test how you will like a college than staying there for a few weeks.

I don't think you're going to be the sole international student. Again, my experience is only from JSA-Georgetown, but during my session there were plenty of students from all across the globe. We had a couple from China, UK, Canada, Gaza, and plenty of other places that I can't exactly remember right now. Yale may not have as many internationals, but I'm pretty sure you wont be alone.

At Georgetown we weren't taught by Georgetown professors, and I think thats the way it works at all of the programs. Most of the professors are gone during the summer anyway. The professors for JSA are usually retired professors or professors from other schools that were hired by the JSA program. At Georgetown my professor was an ex-UVA professor who has been working for JSA for years. However, I do believe you will get an opportunity to speak to an admissions officer at Yale. I know they gave us that chance at Georgetown and it says that Yale does the same on the website.

Hey OP! I was at JSA Yale last summer, so I'd be happy to tell you a bit about it. You will find plenty of international students there- I personally met people from all over Asia. You will be welcomed there, as everyone is extremely friendly. You'll most likely be living in a residential college (we lived in TD last year) which will give you the chance to spend a lot of time with your fellow JSAers. Go and explore campus... there's so much to see!

As far as an admissions advantage, I think it might help a little bit because you'll be familiar with the school. I had a ton of Yale enthusiasm when I applied because of all of the time I spent exploring Yale and seeing what it had to offer. That enthusiasm came out in my essays and interview. I was admitted to the class of 2012 for EA...

P.S... You will not meet Yale professors. The professors at JSA were from Mich State, Rutgers, etc. You will meet an admissions representative, though, and there will be plenty of opportunity to talk to some random Yale students who hang out on campus.

I've heard it's a very fun program, but it won't give you an advantage in getting into Yale, compared to other summer programs. It'll be a nice introduction to the school though, although it's hard to make judgments about a school, especially Yale, over the summer when hardly any students are there!

You won't get to meet professors...most are not even on campus during the summer. However, knowing a Yale professor wouldn't help with admissions unless you knew the professor very well or unless you submitted research or a music recording (etc.) that really impressed the faculty in the relevant department.

that's pretty hilarious,I am from china and I am planning to apply for JSA gtown at first.but after hearing so many advises about JSA is more suitable for underclassmen,I just changed my mind.

As it is a well-known program, I'm sure there will be a diverse group there.

It is not uber-selective, and therefore not uber-prestigious, but it will help to show you are involved -- especially if you are interested in government and politics. However, it doesn't matter which college you go to for the program. Being at Yale only benefits you in exploring the school/campus.

ps I've know people who've done it and they always say it is an awesome, fun experience.. if you're wiling to pay for it

I don't know anything about JSP at Yale, but I know something about the Harvard Summer School Secondary School Program, maybe that's interesting for you, too. I participated last year in the HSSSS and I can tell you that it was really great! There are many international students from all over the world, and, yes, the classes are taught by Harvard professors. Also, there are presentations about college applications and talks by admission officers. Additionally, there is a college fair with representatives from different colleges, Yale being one of them. There are also trips to some surrounding colleges, with, again, Yale being one of them. And: you get the opportunity to visit the Harvard admission office and have an interview. from what i've heard, the admissions advice is good, even if a summer at yale gives no advantage in the actual process.
