Maybe it's best to think about the t-shirt as a test of interest. After all, if I end up going, I'll be "wearing a Yale t-shirt" for the rest of my life. I don't mean that I'm going to end up wearing the t-shirt every day or not go to Yale because I can't bring myself to wear it, it just helps me consider what the Yale experience might mean to me.

How is wearing a Yale 2013 shirt any more pretentious than wearing a UCF 2013 or UF shirt? Haha, all my friends wear their UCF and UF clothing to parties, but I would feel mad awkward wearing a Yale hoodie anywhere but school.

"How is wearing a Yale 2013 shirt any more pretentious than wearing a UCF 2013 or UF shirt?" Another poster mentioned how classmates are wearing their Tufts and U-Mich gear. But with Yale gear (especially if you're an admittee) -- it's a different realm.
Well if you'll let an old Eli share a few thoughts: the fact is that in many social circumstances a Yale emblem of any sort will generate attention. Like it or not the attention will be sometimes good, sometimes bad. But attention is inevitable.
Do I have Yale gear? Sure. I have a sticker on my car rear window and I frequently wear my class ring. My wife and in-laws have gotten me stuff as gifts. How often do I wear it? Rarely. I live in the midwest and one rarely encounters any sort of Ivy-type grad. People will invariably say "YOU went to YALE?". And then comes the need to be modest -- usually a quick explanation and the world's all right again. Not that difficult unless the person assumes that I'm the snob (far from it) when it's actually their insecurity arising.
I love going to alumni or Ivy-type events where wearing a Yale tie is not a big deal. I most love wearing my Residential College pin at alumni events -- now that's something I'm proud to display. Go JE!
My advice: wear your Yale 2013 shirts among family and friends, not to school. You'll understand one day. Congrats BTW! Go YALE

@mistofthekane:
Wow, I don't even know where to start. If I say anything even semi-ungenious, or if I ask virtually any question that has a somewhat obvious answer, people start laughing and go "And SHE'S the one who's going to Yale!"
And, especially in Calc, if I don't get a perfect score the teacher will be like "Oh, I wonder if Yale knows you can't do [insert calculus skill here]".
It's really annoying.
And @T26E4:
I'm also from the Midwest, and in my area, NO ONE goes to Ivy Leagues, or even considers it. So thanks for your insight. Wearing Yale gear is WAY different from wearing UMich stuff around here; when you wear the latter you're usually supporting the athletics.

^ I think so too. Lol
But the yalie status won't help me get guys here, that's for sure. Sigh blame Asian patriarchal society. Guys are scared by girls who are more accomplished than they are (probably true elsewhere as well). I've never had a bf in the same school.
I'm still waiting for my shirt!! Stupid post office as slow as snail. Mails take about three weeks to get here. I ordered small size but now i think it's gonna be too big.

pink001, I get that from one of my close friends, but she can mess with my head and it's all good
Haha, that's funny - Yale shirt as a chick magnet? If I were a guy and did that, I'd be labeled as a major tool.
I have a Wharton shirt that one of my best friends got me (she goes to Penn!) and no one comments about that, mostly because a lot of them don't know what Wharton is. I also wore it to summer camp at Cornell, and the guys said that as soon as I stepped off the plane in Ithaca wearing that shirt, they were intimidated.... Strange workings of the world. I suppose the Wharton name is much more prominent in the east; most of the camp kids were NY and NJ kids anyway.
I'm not from the Midwest, just one of the fatter and poorer states in the country...

Yeah, it's funny when my close friends do that, but when people I never even talk to or teachers do it (a lot) it's not that amusing.
And I agree that the hype about the great schools are in the east; people don't talk much about the Ivies around here (if at all), and none would know what Wharton is.

Comment from a kid in my AP Stat class:
"Hey Yale, guess what I got on the Physics test?"
Me: "What?"
Kid:"A 102! Extra-CREDIT!!! What did you get again...
Me: Grrrr....
Kid: "Oh that's right.... Yale got a 98!"
In summary: Even if we didn't have uniforms, I wouldn't wear my Yale shirt.
