My life has lost all meaning...

Decision: Accepted

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 2270 (M: 750 CR: 760 W: 760)
ACT: None
SAT II: 790 Math II, 800 German
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 1%
AP (place score in parenthesis): APUSH (5), German (5) (these are the only APs one can take before senior year).
IB (place score in parenthesis):
Senior Year Course Load: AP Spanish, AP Econ, AP Calc, AP Government, AP Lit, AP Bio
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Nothing Major; NMSC and some debate awards
Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Debate (President, won some state tournies), Chess Club (President/Founder, ranked in top 10 in state), Youth Court (Lead Attorney), Mock Trial (VP), Public Tutor, and several clubs that didn’t mean very much. About 500 hrs community service.
Job/Work Experience: Worked as a shipping clerk at a blueberry farm in summers. Also a private tutor, though it was only 1-2 hours a week.
Volunteer/Community service: Youth Court: 8hrs/week, NHS, and I did a few cancer fundraisers.
Summer Activities: Working, and I did an internship in Germany working as a TA teaching German last summer.
Essays: I liked them, but it’s hard to self-evaluate. Supplement was about how I was raised in a Sikh commune and didn’t enter school or know how to read until I was ten.
Teacher Recommendation: One was good, she said I was one of her top five students in 20 years of teaching. Didn’t see the other one.
Counselor Rec: Didn’t see; possibly generic.
Additional Rec: Nope
Interview: He seemed to like me, and said he thought I’d do well at Yale. Hard to tell how he evaluated me, though.
Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yep
Intended Major: Mathematics and Philosophy (one major)
State (if domestic applicant): OR
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Mixed, mainly white
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: <$40,000/ year
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nada
Reflection

Strengths: Essays, I think my story was pretty unique.
Weaknesses: Average test scores, and a lack of APs. My school makes it almost impossible to take AP classes before one’s senior year, and I had to fight for the two I took. I should have self studied a few during freshman-junior years.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I have no idea. Admissions are too haphazard these days.
General Comments: I’m ecstatic. I was almost positive I’d be deferred, and had already prepared the deferral and denial result templates. This is the only application I’d filled out, and I was prepared to spend my whole Christmas break doing apps.

To everyone who wasn’t accepted, don’t lose heart. Admissions are so random that any one of you (almost) could have gotten in with a bit of luck. I’m sure you’ll all end up in a place that’s right for you, whether or not it ends up being Yale.

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 2360 (800 CR 800 WR 760 M)
ACT:N/A
SAT II: 800 USH 740 Lit
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.89ish
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): school doesn't rank.. top 5%
AP (place score in parenthesis): French(5), Bio(5), English Lit(5), US History(5)
IB (place score in parenthesis):N/A
Senior Year Course Load: AP Art History, APES, AP English Lang, AP Calc AB, AP Psych, honors French and choir
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NMSF, AP scholar w/Honor, french contest stuff, nothing major
Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
-recreational martial arts since grade 8
- audition-only choir since grade 5, though i quit that this year and joined the school honors choir instead
- recreational piano since age 5
- National Art Honor Society, historian last year, currently vice president (we actually do things, like putting on shows and hosting "Chalkfest" and helping out at art benefits)
- Co-president of Freethinkers club (philosophy, culture, politics, basically a discussion club for any and everything)
- student government treasurer
- Leo Club (a community service club) secretary
- Environmental Club publicity secretary
-I write for several sections of the school newspaper
-debate team: qualified for states
- 100 hours of community service, mostly from Leo Club and Environmental Club
Job/Work Experience: none lol
Volunteer/Community service: see above
Summer Activities:
-performing/ fine arts camp going into 9th and 10th
-Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy going into 11th (a French immersion program)
-RISD precollege program this summer
Essays: common app was meh, yale supplement was AWESOME
Teacher Recommendation: should be pretty good, haven't read
Counselor Rec: eh. large public school = generic counselor rec. she seems to like me well enough though
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: went pretty well! I think I impressed him.
Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Nope
Intended Major: Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies
State (if domestic applicant): CT
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Large Public
Ethnicity: White/Jewish
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: too high but also not high enough
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): mom went to yale undergrad and for med school, currently works there; aunt and uncle went undergrad
Reflection

Strengths: legacy, supplemental essay, scores
Weaknesses: ECs, lack of major awards, general non-specialness
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Weaknesses above. Also, I figured out my passion (feminism, social justice) too late to develop it in high school, quite honestly. I regret nothing. Growing up at my own pace was well worth not getting into Yale. I'm pretty sure I would've been rejected if Yale wasn't trying not to insult my mom =]
General Comments: SO HAPPY for those who got in! I had some good friends get in tonight and I must say they TOTALLY deserve it. Get psyched! For those who didn't get in... it's just a school. Just remember that. For me, deferral actually lifted a huge weight off my shoulders. It gave me a better perspective on who I am and what I'm looking for in a school. I haven't been this happy in months.

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown):2240 (760M, 760CR, 720W)
ACT:N/A
SAT II: 770 Math II, 760 French, 730 US History
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 1%
AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Calc BC (5), AP French (5), AP US History (5), AP Euro (4)
IB (place score in parenthesis):N/A
Senior Year Course Load: Hardest Possible
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NMSF, Le Grand Concours National Placement (?)

Common App: A look at my theater-related work ethic and tendency to find inspiration in strange places in the frame of a story in which I squish an ant, 10/10; Supplement: Very personal look at how music has been the connecting force in my life, 8/10
Teacher Recommendation: Probably great; One from a physics teacher who is strangely obsessed with me, one from an American Literature teacher with whom I felt I could converse deeply, and still do. Didn’t see either, personally.
Counselor Rec: It must have been great; I got into Yale and the Princeton Humanities Symposium, after all.
Additional Rec: One from the school’s Fine Arts director who knows me quite well through both chorus and theater
Interview: Meh. It wasn’t a train wreck, but I felt like it was the weakest part of my application.
Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: MB&B w/ possible double major in Political Science
State (if domestic applicant): Georgia
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Small Private (semi-competitive)
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 180,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None!
Reflection

Strengths: The subjective part was definitely my strongest part. Perhaps that and my ECs in music and theater.
Weaknesses: SAT scores, interview, dearth of ECs (?)
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I honestly think it was due to my common app essay and my teacher recommendations. I couldn’t have gotten in over you all with just my objective stats.
General Comments: I’m shocked at this, actually. I had completely written off acceptance to Yale based on how amazing you all are. For future applicants, I’d just like to reiterate the importance of the subjective half of the application. CC chance threads leave this out, but I guarantee Yale takes it deeply into consideration. It’s the only way I could have gotten in.

To those deferred, good luck in the spring! I know you’ll all go someplace great! For those rejected, just know that what suits Yale may not suit another Ivy or great school, and vice versa. Don’t be crestfallen yet!

Martial arts: big one. 10 years, and I’ve been a black belt/Sensei for 2 years and teach classes. Wrote my CA short answer about it.

Congrats to all who got in! I'm feeling a tad lost, but I'm hopeful for the future. If I had gotten in I would have only applied to one other school, so maybe this is a sign I'm meant to go somewhere else. And to any underclassmen on this forum, remember that test scores aren't everything and that it's all up to chance after a certain point! Fingers crossed for regular decision, but I'm still hopeful. c:

I planned myself for this (by not doing any of my other college essays, of course).
