Pick one: Decision: Accepted Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 2260 total: 800 CR, 740 WR, 720 Math
SAT II: 2230 total: 790 Molecular Bio, 790 Math II, 650 US History
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0, 4.7 weighted
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 4 out of 441
AP (place score in parenthesis): BC Calc (5), AB Subscore (5), Psychology (5), Biology (5), US History (4)
Senior Year Course Load: Calculus III, AP Physics: Mechanics, AP Physics: E & M, science internship at National Cancer Institute (half my day each semester)
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Commended, AP Scholar with Honor
Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): My high school's theater department for all four years, which is an umbrella for a variety of specifics, such as Drama Club (co pres last year, pres this year), Improv Team (founding member 2 years ago, member last year, captain this year), and performing in 8 shows. I've played piano for 7 years and go to annual adjudications. Rec soccer for 6 years. Academic team for 3 years, including competing on a local TV show.
Job/Work Experience: (what I included in app.) Sales associate at an antique store, and this past summer, a 40 hours/week 8 week job as an intern at the National Cancer Institute, which carries over as a class for my school year
Volunteer/Community service: Habitat for Humanity, volunteering for a few summers at a kid's nature camp
Essays: My main commonapp essay was about the theater dept. and I don't think it was necessarily phenomenal, but it was close to my heart. In all my writing I just tried to be genuine; I am proud of my essays and have some pretty good stuff in them, but they weren't like Pulitzer-winning
Teacher Recommendation: Got my English teacher, who is one of the 2 teachers who run the theater department, and me and her are extremely close. My other was my calc teacher who everyone jokes about how much she liked me.
Counselor Rec: Turns out the other director of the theater department doubles as a guidance counselor, so I got him to write it instead of an impersonal secondary guidance counselor
Additional Rec: My mentor from the National Cancer Institute wrote me one I could never even have imagined.
Interview: I was nervous, but it actually went really well. My interviewer had similar interests/experiences, and we hit it off fairly well. He said he thought I was a good fit and said I knew my stuff about the college.
Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Molecular Biophysics and Biochemestry
State (if domestic applicant): Maryland
School Type: Public, 1600 students
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: prefer not to give specifics, but towards upper middle class
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None of that sort
Reflection

Strengths: Specificity in my science interests, immersion in my extra-curricular passions
Weaknesses: My standardized test scores were not flawless, and I think I could have improved a few written answers
Why you think you were accepted: I am still in shock, but I think (as my interviewer said) I kind of fit Yale (I'm not trying to be pretentious or say that other people don't, please don't take that the wrong way). I love science and math, but also get involved and have an artsy side to me, and I think my genuineness and voice shined through.
General Comments: To those who are accepted: Contratulations! I may just see you around in New Haven next year =). If you were deferred or rejected, good luck and god speed on your other applications! I hope you get them done in time to relax and enjoy some time off. All in all, I am sure we will all end up in wonderful schools. Thank you all SO MUCH for helping me through the process. It's an absolutely crazy time in our lives, but next year it will all be behind us and we can be happy. Love you all! |

Music: 9 years of clarinet, 4 years of bass clarinet, picked up saxophone over the summer and now play in school's highest jazz lab. Been in various orchestras, youth, pit, and community...mostly private lessons though. Debate: Competed at state-level and national tournaments. Decent, never great. Policy/Public forum. Crew: Rowed novice and varsity for my city's rowing club...not for too long, though.
Job/Work Experience: Cousins Subs, little over a year, 15-20 hrs/week (more in summer)
Volunteer/Community service: 600+ hours total, not counting 3 1/2 straight weeks of upcoming service that is built into our school's curriculum. Highlights include church camp, organizing bakery delivery to ~110 needy families and/or centers in the area, working with a group of friends at an urban farm for a semester, living with families in the Dominican Republic countryside for 2 weeks building latrines and floors.
Summer Activities: Student Health Care Conference at U of Maryland, various mission trips (some mentioned above), orchestra, etc
Essays: Both are quality, with the Common App one being the most unique
Teacher Recommendation: Both AP teachers, both considered among the best teachers in the school, both love me. Haven't seen/heard the letters themselves but I assume they are fine
Counselor Rec: Haven't known him for THAT long but we have a good relationship. Again, though, I haven't seen it.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: Went well enough, not awful but not stellar either.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Looking at the thread, I was probably a few coin flips away from acceptance...but also a few a way from rejection.
General Comments: Right now, only bummed out about the fact that I won't hear back from any colleges until springtime. Still, in good company. 9 other apps submitted, mostly to rigorous colleges. It's all good. |

My interview was also strong
Weaknesses: GPA- couple B+s junior year
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: all of the applicants from my school were either deferred or denied- we were all pretty qualified, so I'm guessing it had to do with that and some bad luck. Also, just from this thread it seems like there are a million biology majors, so I'm assuming that didn't work in my favor
General Comments: Congratulations to everyone who got in! |

Decision: Accepted Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 2380, R 780, W 800, M 800
ACT: -
SAT II: Biology M 800, Chemistry 800, Math II 800
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): School doesn't report.
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Unranked.
AP (place score in parenthesis): All APs self studied. Both paid.
Volunteer/Community service: Council for a regional student program for a charity (10-12, Chair in 12), fundraising and awareness for the disease I do research on (raised a few thousand) (11-12).
Summer Activities: Each job took up one summer each, worked full-time. Did nothing in grade 9 summer.
Essays: Yale supplement was probably my favorite pieces of writing ever, Common App was good but not amazing. Activity short answer was on how my research led to me getting involved with fundraising and public speaking for the disease - pretty moving story.
Teacher Recommendation: Chemistry and English teachers. Chemistry teacher said research was at a Master's thesis level, English teacher's was absolutely glowing as well.
Counselor Rec: Didn't really know her, but rec was long and very good if a bit generic at times.
Additional Rec: Research mentor's. Didn't see. I would imagine it was good though.
Interview: I thought it went really well, but was only 35-40 minutes. Good objective stats with early self-studied APs.
Weaknesses: Only one major leadership position, almost no ECs outside of my passion area, not involved in the school at all.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: True passion was able to shine through. And I absolutely loved my entire Yale supplement - spent pretty much the entire summer on it.
General Comments: One of the most incredible moments of my life when I saw the decision. Tried too hard to be that kid that was the president of all the clubs, etc in the first two years of high school, but began research in grade 11 and discovered my passion. My entire application was essentially built on my final two years. Realized it's so key to find what you love and just do it - regardless of when you realize or how do you realize it, you'll end up a better person whether you get into your dream school or not. Hope this is at least somewhat helpful to future applicants. I know I went through countless posts like this one over the last few years so I figured I had to return the favor. :) You really don't need to be the president of 6 clubs or whatever and chair five committees to get into a good college - however cliché it is, just do what you love to do, and the rest will come. |

Some thoughts on this year's Early acceptances: I know many of you are probably racking your heads over Yale's absolutely arbitrary, crapshoot admissions process that, in my opinion, rejected or deferred some of the MOST talented members in the applicant pool. This doesn't mean that those who got in didn't deserve it; everyone put in an inordinate amount of hard work to get in, and I wish them the best of luck for the future. The increasing reliance on carefully apportioned quotas for race, gender, ethnicity, etc. by top colleges are destroying the chances of the most accomplished applicants on various levels, and it's imply disheartening. On this forum alone, I have seen those with regional level accomplishments and mediocre test scores get in over applicants with national/international accomplishments and grades/scores to match. Yale's early action selection process has been disappointing, to say the least. Why did Yale choose to DEFER, not REJECT, so many of these students? Is it possible that they haven't fully reviewed the applications of all the early applicants? Or did they simply see so many "borderline" applicants that they couldn't reject them outright? I think it's the latter. I was deferred with excellent test scores, salutatorian of my class, national-level awards and performances for classical South Asian music, state-level debate awards, and I've seen so many on this forum with stats similar to mine or better; yet, we've been rejected or deferred, an astonishing phenomenon. My message here is to encourage deferred applicants (especially if you're Asian) to be PRACTICAL about the biased/skewed admissions process and to take a rejection/deferral from a rational perspective. You do NOT need to go to a prestigious, name-brand school to succeed; how could Yale possibly judge your worth? College, and the future, is what you choose to make of it. Stay positive. |
