Does the "high rate of crime" issue apply to most top universities, or only to Yale?

I hear a lot about crime rate in NH, so I wondered whether this is just a Yale thing, or does it apply to most universities?

I heard somewhere else that Columbia has the same problem. What about HPS?

Any college campus has it's share of crimes. Colleges that are in urban settings generally have more crimes than schools in rural areas.

Violent crime against students is rare at Yale. Your biggest risk is having a bike stolen or something taken that was not properly secured. Although doorways to residential areas require card key access, it seems like most suite doors are propped open especially if someone is inside. As someone who locks his car everywhere including suburban streets and shopping centers, it seems like the Yale students don't worry much about theft. Sure there are areas I would avoid at night but that is common sense in any city.

Your bike might not be your biggest concern; the times they are a-changing. This is from a 10/17 email from the Police Chief to the Yale community:
Quote:
" Recently, we have seen several instances of phones being stolen on and around campus.* These phones, commonly held in the hands of pedestrians while talking or texting, are being targeted by thieves who travel on foot and on bicycles.

This is a national trend that is being encountered in small and large towns, and it seems to have arrived in New Haven.* Because iPhones seem particularly attractive to thieves (who can sell them quickly for cash) this trend has actually acquired a name: “Apple Picking”
Being aware of your surroundings is always smart, wherever you are.
