Yale Admit Rate Drops to 8.3%

Just over one hour ago, Yale News posted its new admissions rate statistics.

Quote:
Yale College posted an Ivy League record-low acceptance rate this year, as the total acceptance rate dropped 1.3 percentage points from last year's initial rate to 8.3 percent for the class of 2012.
Quote:
Yale accepted 1,007 applicants out of the 17,925 who applied regular decision in January, for a regular decision admit rate of 5.6 percent. An additional 1,052 students were offered positions on the waitlist.
Looks like the damage is seeping out....

omg, i'm now so jealous of my friend who got in HYP...she took one of those spots. That's crazy though - more waitlist than accepts?

Something seems strange about Yale's acceptance numbers.

1,007 seems a little low for an acceptance number. Even though its "Yale", it doesn't mean that those who gain acceptance will actually say yes. And besides, according to the common app online it stated that out of 21,101 applicants, Yale accepted 1,878. Seems a little skewed huh?

^It's possible that the 1,878 includes those accepted under SCEA. The 1,007 is specifically for regular decision acceptances.

Besides, it's Yale. How much could they possibly need to beef up their image?

House of London: the 1878 includes the 1007 from Regular Decision and the 871 from Early Action. What's so peculiar about that?

OK I see^. I believe those numbers will definitely discourage future applicants. I wouldn't be surprised if the number of people that applied dropped next year

WOW.
Colleges (and students) everywhere just got more competitive.
I'm so glad I'm over with it.

But seriously, this cycle needs to end before our high school system degenerates into a symbol of utter stress..

This whole process is getting ridiculous. Hopefully it turns around soon because House of London's probably right, people are going to be discouraged from applying to top colleges by these numbers....

I actually think it'll make more people apply "just to see." It'll be less a matter of merit with a more substantial applicant pool. I have a feeling it'll be like those really specialized schools with like 2% admission--no one expects admission, but you might as well try.

Anecdotally, I've seen the rise in "just let me see" type of applicant. I'd point to the Common App and just Yale's increased visibility nationwide. A full third to half of my recent interviewees could fit this description.
