I'm not able to visit Yale and I don't know what New Haven is like. How is the city, in general? Thankss

My brother went to Yale, and every time I visited him I hung out in New Haven a lot. The area right around Yale - so, the places you're going to be spending the lion's share of your time in - is pretty great. There are coffee shops, bars, pizza places, great ethnic restaurants, and even an Urban Outfitters. It has pretty much everything a college student could want.

That being said, there ARE parts of New Haven that are a little sketchy/"underdeveloped." That is, you wouldn't want to be stuck in some neighborhoods alone at night. These neighborhoods are not the ones that are immediately surrounding Yale, though, so the chances that you WOULD be stuck alone at night in a creepy back alley are pretty slim.

New Haven's like any fairly large city; there are fabulous areas and... Not so fabulous areas. Overall, though, I think it's a wonderful resource (at least, my brother thought so) for Yale students and provides a pretty great backdrop for a wonderful four years!

Safety in New Haven

Students crisscross campus heading to course discussion sections, study groups, libraries open until midnight and various places. Yale students and New Haven residents are often found exploring downtown well into the evening hours. Many stores are open until 9:00 PM and many restaurants are open until at least midnight.

Yale University has one of the better safety records in the Ivy League. According to reports filed with the U.S. Department of Education in 2000, the total number of crimes occurring on and around Yale's campus was below the Ivy League average. In fact, Yale University reported the second lowest number of on-campus crimes of any Ivy League school. Overall, crime in the City of New Haven is down by more than 50 percent since 1990.

And this is year 2000. No doubt in the past 8 years, NH has further improved.

Thanks! New Haven sounds pretty decent. Location was my only doubt so I think I'll apply for Yale... as a reach lol

Attacking New Haven is the way that ill-informed outsiders typically try to attack Yale. Honestly, the city has some very nice areas, and because it is city (albeit not as overwhelming as a place like NYC), it offers far more resources. There are great restaurants, bars, clubs, shops, etc.

Safety in New Haven as a whole has greatly improved. I was reading a Crimson news article the other day about how there were more "violent crimes" re: student there than at Yale. B/c New Haven has had such a bad rep, the university goes to extra precaution to ensure student safety.
