Official Yale EA 2013 Hopeful Thread

School is about to start (or has started) for many of us. I think it's about time this thread should be made, as many of us have also started our applications.

Post on this thread if you have any questions about the process, need to vent your anxieties, etc.

I'll start first. The deadline is Nov. 1, but I heard they start to read applications a week earlier. I'm taking my last SAT in November, and will have the scores sent to Yale (official score report before this SAT will be sent before this of course). They won't read my application when I don't have the score in, right? I'm really counting on improvement, and if they don't see that score, it might jepordize me. I'll make a note in the common app that im taking the SAT again in november, so that they realize...

Question about the common application extracurricular portion. I play piano and have a position in the band so how should I write that. Should I write:

Activitiy: piano Position: Band member

or

Activity: Band Position: Pianist

The reason I ask is that I've been a pianist for a long time whereas I've been a band member only since sophomore year.

collegebound2009,

we are in the same boat. In the common application, there is a spot for SAT scores that says "date taken/will be taken". I simply put 11/08 and left the score section blank. I'm sure that will be enough to let the admission officers know that you are waiting for you scores.

I'll be applying EA this year! Still unsure if my chances would be greater in the regular applicant pool, but I figure that I ought to somehow tell the admissions officers that Yale really is my #1 choice...

^ they'll at least know you're not committing to any other school ED or SCEA, but because it's nonbinding they can't be sure it's your #1 choice.

I am just plain stressed! Yale is my #1 choice by far, and not just because "it's Yale". I frequently find myself wishing it wasn't an Ivy and had the acceptance rate of my safety school so that I could get in. I am just plain IN LOVE! Gah.

Yeah people say that but the thing is, it's probably not true. How do you know you would have found it if it wasn't so prominent? Would you have really wanted to find more out about a school (to the extent that you probably did Yale) if it was a safety? Prestige is on EVERYONE's mind and you're lying to yourself if you don't acknowledge that.

Just making a point.

I can't do ED anywhere, (financial aid crap), so I was thinking of doing either Yale or MIT EA. I'd prefer the former, of course, but I think for a kid with my strengths ,(Math, mostly), MIT is A LOT more realistic. I don't know which to pick; my dreams are battling my pragmatism.

I finally decided to apply EA to Yale. I was kind of disappointed with my junior year grades, but everyone has told me to go for it, so I'm going for it! I'm so excited!!

Yale is my #1 also.

To my beloved colonization:

ummm the whole point of EA is that it is nonbinding.

which means you can apply to both...

also, with schools at the level of MIT and Yale, it is going to make very little difference where you apply early. This is because your chances of acceptance go up only very slightly when you do early instead of RD.

I think that you would stand out a bit more in the yale applicant pool since so many applicants are more humanities.

Believe me, The Protagonist, I know what you mean when you say that prestige is on everyone's mind. I was actually never even considering Yale (I assumed it would be snobby and pretentious and was strongly leaning towards small liberal arts schools such as Hamilton and Bates at the time) when I went there for Model UN my sophomore year. I instantly fell in love with the whole atmosphere, and perhaps the prestige.

Eating Food- doesn't single choice EA mean you can't apply anywhere else early? Yes, I know I could still apply to Yale RD if I got into MIT early, (I wouldn't bother doing it the other way around), but I just want to do one early.

That's a good point about me sticking out, though. I would be a very normal MIT kid; nothing they're not used to. (780 math SAT 1, 800 SAT2 math 2, 5 AP stats, taking AP calc, A+ average in math, RPI winner, math league prez, blah, blah, blah.) I think you're right. I'll EA Yale and if I don't get in I'll proceed as planned. thanks.

So what time should we begin calling to schedule alumni/campus interviews?
