Decision: Accepted

Objective:
  • SAT I (breakdown):760CR, 800M, 670W (7 essay) - (did not submit)
  • ACT: 35
  • SAT II: USH (800), Math II (800), Chem (800) - (did not submit)
  • Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
  • Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Unranked but definitely top 10%
  • AP (place score in parenthesis): Calc BC (5), APUSH (5), Chem (5)
  • IB (place score in parenthesis):
  • Senior Year Course Load: All AP except choir, as tough as I can take while doing 3 seasons of sports
  • Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Semifinalist, assorted and odd awards

Subjective:
  • Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Crew (spring and fall, 9-12) (Captain), Swimming (winter 9-12, Captain of Div I, State Champ team), Academic Games (6-12) (Captain, volunteer coach, Nationals Hall of Fame), Choir: part of three groups (founder of student-run group), ceramics...., etc.
  • Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer coaching, NHS volunteering, summer volunteer work
  • Summer Activities: Crew camps, swim camps, Research assistant in computer modeling (didn't publish though), volunteering, etc.
  • Essays: Good enough (I'm a terrible writer)
  • Teacher Recommendation: Good (I never read them, but I got along very well with my teachers)
  • Counselor Rec: No idea (...nice guy, but he doesn't really know me)
  • Interview: Good

Other
  • Applied for Financial Aid?: No
  • Intended Major: Engineering
  • State (if domestic applicant): MI
  • School Type: relatively competitive public school, college town
  • Ethnicity: Asian
  • Gender: male
  • Income Bracket: -
  • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Double legacy (both parents Yale College)

Reflection
  • Strengths: Legacy, leadership, grades, sports : I'm pretty eclectic, and I have a myriad of interests
  • Weaknesses: Writing
  • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Legacy + leadership + sports

General Comments: Be yourself, and push yourself to go farther.

The bad thing about having legacy is it makes you doubt yourself. I see all these overqualified applicants and wonder if I would be good enough without legacy.

the second-happiest moment of my life

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
  • SAT I (breakdown): 2400 (800 CR, 800 M, 800 W although 9 essay)
  • ACT: never took
  • SAT II: 800s on latin, world history, literature, math iic, biology e
  • Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
  • Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1 of a measly 50
  • AP (place score in parenthesis): nat'l ap scholar. 5's on english lang, english lit, latin lit, latin virgil, us govt & politics, macroeconomics. 4's on micro and physics b. my school doesn't offer ap classes.
  • IB (place score in parenthesis): none
  • Senior Year Course Load: seminar in renaissance literature & philosophy, calc bc, greek literature, chemistry, studio art. again, non-ap curriculum.
  • Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): i have a few. TASP, national finalist in national history day, many many classics awards (including international ones) which would identify me even more than this post already does.
Subjective:
  • Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): speech & debate (9-12, captain 12, national awards), varsity cross-country and track (10-12, captain both 12, divisional state medals in track & regional in cross-country), regional science bowl (9-12, captain 12), national history day (11-12). more important, many many classics activities: inter alia, translated and directed a greek tragedy in 11, & now running a statewide educational nonprofit in 12.
  • Job/Work Experience: shamefully, none.
  • Volunteer/Community service: unpaid job managing on-campus coffee shop this year (raises funds for the class); directed nativity pageants at quaker meeting (10-12); peer tutoring (9-12); casual work for a homeless shelter (9-12)
  • Summer Activities: 2007, study abroad in austria & debate camp at the university of wyoming. 2008, TASP. (memo to jrs reading this thread: apply!)
  • Essays: i think these were the heart of my application. common app essay traces my change from isolated, ashamed & angry in my sophomore and junior years to the polar opposite after TASP. i don't really like the version of myself which this essay discusses, but i think it represents me as i am now very accurately. secondary essay is best described as a prose-poem about classical greek, which keeps me sane. why yale basically says first "you have a fabulous classics department" and second "i go to a tiny high school and need a tiny college to hold my hand."
  • Teacher Recommendation: i read one, which was effusive and very me. other one is probably positive but less descriptive.
  • Counselor Rec: i read it, also effusive. lots of superlatives.
  • Additional Rec: they have enough to read
  • Interview: not the best i've given, but pretty lively. interviewer said almost nothing, which made it very hard to decide when to stop.
Other
  • Applied for Financial Aid?: yes. got a pittance, which hopefully will change.
  • Intended Major: classics
  • State (if domestic applicant): arizona
  • Country (if international applicant): usa
  • School Type: tiny ultraconservative charter; curriculum is fixed and resembles directed studies or the columbia core.
  • Ethnicity: WASP
  • Gender: female
  • Income Bracket: upper-middle class
  • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): classics major (with very deep background), TASP, maybe charter student, maybe geographical
Reflection
  • Strengths: academics. academics. did i mention academics? seriously, i represent the "intellectual" (scare quotes are intentional) culture that yale in particular wants to promote.
  • Weaknesses: my parents are professors (this can be a major liability)
  • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: i wore my lucky headband today. seriously, 1) i love yale and it shows; 2) luck.

SAT Math is more about carefulness than intellectual ability. I know a guy with Gold medal international math olympiad but did not get 800 too. Two mistakes and you bid 50 points goodbye.

Decision: Deferred

Objective:
  • SAT I (breakdown): 700R 800M 700W - 2200
  • ACT:
  • SAT II: 800 MIIC, 780 Chem, 730 Bio (not sent)
  • Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.82
  • Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): ~ top 5% (450)
  • AP (place score in parenthesis): 5 Stat (only 2 AP courses offered before senior yr)
  • IB (place score in parenthesis):
  • Senior Year Course Load: AP Phy (Mech), AP Calc BC, AP Bio, Phy C (independent study), Continental Lit, Medieval Hist (no other APs offered)
  • Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): nat'l merit semis, cum laude society (dunno what this is really), DOE NSB Regional Champions, some other stuff...
Subjective:
  • Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Math Team (captain), National Science Bowl (captain), Soccer (9-12, incl club), Web Design + Programming, Graphic Art
  • Job/Work Experience: sadly none
  • Volunteer/Community service: Youth Soccer Coaching, Coaching Middle School Science Olympiad
  • Summer Activities: HSSP Astronomy (got an A) + more soccer
  • Essays: Very good, very deliberate, lots of refinement
  • Teacher Recommendation: awesome, esp for math
  • Counselor Rec: dunno, wildcard...
  • Additional Rec: considering...
  • Interview: very well. took over an hour, two-sided conversation, no dull moments
Other
  • Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
  • Intended Major: Physics & Mathematics
  • State (if domestic applicant): MA
  • Country (if international applicant):
  • School Type: public (450)
  • Ethnicity: indian
  • Gender: m
  • Income Bracket: > $200K
  • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
Reflection
  • Strengths: none on paper. But there were a number of intangibles that I submitted along with my application: art portfolio, physics projects (successfully constructed Van de Graaff generator and Tesla Coil, and future projects mentioned, all with low budget)
  • Weaknesses: Everything else. Though driven, my numbers are still low. My high school is very rigorous, though, to put the GPA in context. No one gets 3.8 > with SAT scores < 2100. All the 4.0s with 2200s are just nonexistent.
  • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really should have been rejected, maybe they saw something in me
General Comments: Good Luck!!

GUYS I cannot write coherent messages right now because I am excited for everybody. I actually can't believe it was a year ago and there is already a new prospective freshman class. Can you feel the excitement? Because I can. Feel free to hit me up with questions, little Yale babies.
