Well, you can't apply early to both Yale and Stanford, so this does seem suspicious. Does Stanford send out likely letters?
On the other hand, I don't think these stats are completely impossible. If this is a URM, first-generation college, from a weak public school in Detroit, and if the grades show a substantial upward trend, this could be true.

As I pledged to do report the result...

Decision: Rejected

Objective:
  • SAT I (breakdown): 2300 (770 CR, 800 M, 730 W)
  • ACT: N/A
  • SAT II: Maths IIC 800, Lit 740
  • Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.91
  • Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top decile (actual: top 5% probably)
  • AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Eng. Lang (5), AP Cal AB (5)
  • IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
  • Senior Year Course Load: AP Eng. Lit., AP Bio, U.S. History, Spanish IV, Band, Jazz Band, Senior Project, AP Cal BC (Self study), AP Music Theory (Self study)
  • Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Some school awards
Subjective:
  • Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Fall Musical/Spring Play (Stage manager, student director, music director), Music Festival, Varsity XC, NHS, Habitat for Humanity, Piano, more music stuff, created/produced/directed/edited own reality show for Senior Project
  • Job/Work Experience: Tutor for a year
  • Volunteer/Community service: Habitat for Humanity
  • Summer Activities: International Thespian Festival
  • Essays: Both very personal. Thought they were pretty good XD
  • Teacher Recommendation: Haven't seen them, but were told they were good.
  • Counselor Rec: Told he wrote a very good one.
  • Additional Rec: Outstanding one from drama teacher who I worked with on productions for two years.
  • Interview: N/A
Other
  • Applied for Financial Aid?: No
  • Intended Major: Theater Studies
  • State (if domestic applicant): N/A
  • Country (if international applicant): U.A.E.
  • School Type: Small Private. Sends 2~4 to Ivies each year.
  • Ethnicity: Asian
  • Gender: Male
  • Income Bracket: $100,000
  • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None
Reflection
  • Strengths: Unusual Asian? Interested in arts. Essays...
  • Weaknesses: Courseload wasn't strong enough.
  • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I definitely think the lack of courseload strength hurt me. And I probably wasn't a standout applicant without any national recognition, etc. I was hoping that Yale would want a technical theatre-oriented Asian male, but guess not. XD
General Comments: I was bummed when I first read the letter, but I've taken this as another experience. I never even dreamed of applying to Yale before, and I'm proud of myself for doing so. I still think Yale is a fantastic school, and hopefully will be attending there for grad school. And as cliche as it sounds, I know everything will work out in the end, so no hard feelings.

So congrats to all those accepted! And good luck to all those deferred. And to my fellow rejectees, I'm passing around a bottle of rum.

  • Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 5/316, behind 4 valedictorians
  • AP (place score in parenthesis): Calc AB (4), English Lang (4), US History (4), Euro Hist (4), Physics B (2) so embarrassing, but our teacher was a first year AP physics teacher who doesn't believe in teaching concepts but rather formulas to crunch numbers with :/
  • IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
  • Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc BC, AP Literature, AP Macroeconomics, AP Biology, Journalism, Tennis/Track
  • Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Um, no major awards in that sense

  • Counselor Rec: Generic. but pretty much supports the compliments of my other recs

stats

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
  • SAT I: Math 740, CR 740, Writing 740 (Essay 11/12) (stats are rather low, but I did take the SAT sophomore year and left it at that)
  • ACT: 34
  • SAT II: Math 770, Lit 740, Physics 720, French 680
  • Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9
  • Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 5%

  • Major Awards: None
Subjective:
  • Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Community Service Association (president), Class president, Orchestra, Amnesty International, Environmental Club, Madrigal Club, Choir
  • Job/Work Experience: none
  • Volunteer/Community service: Community Service Association
  • Summer Activities: music camp, long distance education
  • Essays: Common App one was about a personal hero; Yale supplement: how much I hated a subject
  • Teacher Recommendation: English, Math, and French. Strong recommendations
  • Counselor Rec: Strong
  • Additional Rec: none. Sent in 3 academic ones.
  • Interview: Kicked ass. Interviewer called yesterday to congratulate me.
Other
  • Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
  • Intended Major: Linguistics
  • State (if domestic applicant): MA
  • School Type: Did both public and private
  • Ethnicity: Asian
  • Gender: Female
  • Income Bracket: -
  • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None whatsoever.
Reflection
  • Strengths: Essays, transcript (double the number of requirements for graduation), music, leadership positions
  • Weaknesses: Standardized tests
  • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Don't know.
General Comments: To others applying - I got in without any connections whatsoever, as a middle-class Asian girl violinist. I applied on a bit of a whim, deciding on around Oct. 15. And look what happened! See, you can have some faith in the college application process. I trust that we shall all end up somewhere that is "right" for each of us.

wow, after looking over all these posts, I'm surprised at how similar the stats/ECs are between the accepted and the deferred. i thought those accepted would stand out more (don't get me wrong! many of those accepted are simply stellar!). Guess the essays matter more than I originally believed....

Decision: Deferred

Objective:

* SAT I (breakdown): 790 Math, 800 Verbal, 780 Writing (2370)
* ACT: NA
* SAT II: 800 physics, 800 Math II-C, 800 US History, 780 biology, 780 chemistry
* Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.96? No idea.
* Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 2/303
* AP (place score in parenthesis): Computer Science AB (5), US History (5), Microeconomics (5, self-study), Macroeconomics (5, self-study)
* IB (place score in parenthesis): NA
* Senior Year Course Load: AP European History, AP US Government and Politics, AP Spanish, AP English Literature/Composition, AP Physics, AP Statistics, gym
* Major Awards: Academic Decathlon first and second in region + lots of other awards, Columbia book award, NHS, National Merit Semifinalist, New Jersey Science League top 10% (three years), County Math League first in group. (Cross-country player of the year after application submitted.)

Subjective:

* Extracurriculars: SADD (president), GSA (treasurer), cross-country (varsity), winter track, spring track, politics club, earth club, community service club, quiz bowl, science league, state and county math leagues, flute choir, recycling club.
* Job/Work Experience: Tutoring.
* Volunteer/Community service: Library volunteer, recycling through school, community service club activities.
* Summer Activities: I think all I mentioned was taking calculus BC and volunteering at my local library.
* Essays: Common app philosophically oriented, supplement about running before school. Both unorthodox but perhaps both designed to avoid the fact that my life is not particularly interesting.
* Teacher Recommendation: One said I was among the best students he’d ever taught, not sure about the other.
* Counselor Rec: When she was holding it in front of me I sort of saw something about “boundless intellect,” but since I wasn’t supposed to read it I didn’t try to see more :P
* Interview: On campus, over summer. Don’t really remember or know how it went but I don’t think it was great or awful.

Other

* Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes.
* Intended Major: Physics, international relations, or philosophy. (Now exclusively physics.)
* State: NJ
* School Type: Public
* Ethnicity: White
* Gender: Female
* Income Bracket: ~$100k
* Hooks: None? My sister has cancer but I didn’t use it.

Reflection

* Strengths: Standardized testing.
* Weaknesses: Sloppy sophomore year – ended up with a B+ in chem and spent two years in college prep English.
* Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Too dull to let in, too smart to reject.

General comments: I still have hope for RD, since I’m getting much better grades, might wind up valedictorian, and will point out that I intend to move into physics... I heard Yale is looking for science people, and being a girl should help there.

Yeah that's what you need to take away from all this. However, calculations have made in this thread, and there are some differences in scores between accepted and deferred. Certainly more than there was with Stanford. But yeah, you need the total package it seems like.

Excited! Fully expecting rejection (I know it's just delayed until April, but still)

Decision: Deferred

Objective:
  • SAT I (breakdown): 1370/2050 (CR: 760, M: 610, W: 680) <- Math=FAIL!
  • ACT:30 but not reported
  • SAT II: US History: 800, Literature: 730, Biology: 790
  • Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): probably a 3.7-3.8
  • Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top 10%
  • AP (place score in parenthesis): Biology (5), English Language (5), US History (5), World History (4)
  • Senior Year Course Load: Heaviest possible
  • Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): nonexistent....National Merist SF though
Subjective:
  • Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Quizbowl, Varsity Basketball, Science Club/Science Olympiad, French Club (President), Student Government (Class President)
  • Job/Work Experience: none
  • Volunteer/Community service: 70+ hours at lighthouse for the blind
  • Summer Activities: worked at a glassfactory but didn't mention it
  • Essays: common app essay not great, supplement essays pretty good
  • Teacher Recommendation: waived my right to read 'em
  • Counselor Rec:see above
  • Additional Rec: none
  • Interview: decent
Other
  • Applied for Financial Aid?: no
  • Intended Major: something liberal artsy
  • School Type: religious
  • Ethnicity: Black
  • Gender: Female
  • Income Bracket: umm upper middle
  • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM,
Reflection
  • Strengths: subject tests, ethnicity, recommendations i'm hoping...
  • Weaknesses: math score!!! essays probably
  • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Quite frankly, I'm just not stellar. Competitve enough to apply yes, but to accept? No. Compared to the general population yes - I'm awesome. But compared to the Yale applicant pool? No way man.
General Comments: I was honestly expecting a rejection so just the fact that I got deferred from freaking Yale is good news for my other apps...I probably will get rejected come April but I'm okay with that. I totally slacked off in high school - I probably don't deserve it as much as others anyway. Congratulations to those who made it - better look with the rest to those who didn't....and a mix of those last two to those who were deferred.
