| Decision: Deferred Objective:- SAT I (breakdown): 800 W 800 M 800 CR (12 E) - first time
- SAT II: 800 Math Level 2C 800 Chem 800 Phys
- Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
- Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/238
- AP (place score in parenthesis): Statistics (5), Physics B (5), Chemistry (5), Calc BC (5), Latin (5)
- Senior Year Course Load: One of the hardest
- Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Gold medal for top score in ICAS (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools) Math competition, Maxima cum laude in National Latin Exam, 1st and 2nd in various regional math team competitions + numerous awards in literary competitions in school
Subjective:- Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): violin/music (soloist, concertmaster, founder of school string quartet), debate (team captain, coach of two junior teams), editor of school literary magazine, astronomy club, academic support club (tutor)
- Job/Work Experience: intern at law firm, tutor at Kumon
- Volunteer/Community service: entertainer at local hospital, organizer for local multicultural festival
- Essays: Common Application essay was brilliant, second was not-so-good.
- Teacher Recommendation: average, as they hadn't written recs before, but they ticked mostly in the "one of the top students in my career" column.
- Counselor Rec: impersonal
- Additional Rec: violin teacher, a professor at the local Conservatory - average
- Interview: poor - was a phone interview, and interviewer was inexperienced
Other- Applied for Financial Aid?: No
- Intended Major: Environmental Engineering
- State (if domestic applicant):
- Country (if international applicant): Australia
- School Type: independent
- Ethnicity: Asian
- Gender: Male
- Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): strong involvement and passion for music
Reflection- Strengths: showed lots of leadership and initiative; perfect stats
- Weaknesses: Asian, international, not as many ECs as others (few ECs with a lot of depth) - hence may have been seen as not diverse in interests, no "big" awards like Intel or Olympiad medals
- Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was a victim of Affirmative Action policies; had no outstanding feature like a major award, etc.
General Comments: My experience just goes to show that SATs are not the be all or the end all. Perfect scores mean NOTHING. You need to have an active, energetic personality. After all, robots can get perfect scores every time, but it's the human side that matters.

General Comments:
Congratulations to the lucky few! And if you got rejected/deferred, just remember that there's most definitely somebody out there that's more qualified than all of us that also met with the same fate today. We've been denied the Yale experience, but there are plenty of other great schools out there waiting to hand us acceptance letters. So while the next few months may be a bit of a heartbreak, be prepared for some good fortune come March/April. I'd like to second the above poster's comment -- perfect scores aren't everything.

| Decision: Deferred Objective:- SAT I (breakdown): 800 CR/770 M/770 WR (1570/2340)
- ACT: Didn't Take
- SAT II: 740 Literature, 780 Biology-M
- Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.7
- Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 5%
- AP (place score in parenthesis): Bio-5, World History-4, Lang-5, Chem-4
- IB (place score in parenthesis): Not offered.
- Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc BC, AP Lit, Organic Biochem, Newspaper, Half-Day Internship at NIH
- Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None
Subjective:- Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Newspaper Editor-in-Chief, basically my biggest time commitment, also lots of acting stuff, creative writing, research at NIH.
- Job/Work Experience: Lifeguard, Tutor
- Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer at Children's Hospital
- Summer Activities: Volunteering, Lifeguarding, Acting, Research.
- Essays: I liked them. One about my relationship with the English language, one about running with my dad.
- Teacher Recommendation: One really good, one just okay.
- Counselor Rec: He likes me a lot...
- Additional Rec: None sent.
- Interview: The on-campus one was, I thought the alumni one was really good.
Other- Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes.
- Intended Major: Cognitive Science/English
- State (if domestic applicant): MD
- Country (if international applicant):
- School Type: Public
- Ethnicity: African-American
- Gender: Female
- Income Bracket: Just under $200,000
- Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): If you want to call URM a hook...
Reflection- Strengths: I thought that I did a good job of showing my passions for writing and for life, in my essays, in my interviews, and my English teacher's recommendation. I'm a good writer, and I looked back at the essays that I wrote for Yale, and I thought they were two of the best pieces I've written in my entire life. URM, too, I guess.
- Weaknesses: GPA. Junior year was my worst year. Downhill trend...My 2nd rec, when I read it, wasn't too stellar, just okay. I didn't see his checklist. I overwrote for every essay/short answer except the short takes.
- Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My GPA for sure.
General Comments: I won't lie, I did hope that AA would give me the boost I needed to get over the hump that is my GPA. But it didn't, and I think that's fair...I'm not an athelete, and my EC's are just normal-ish, even though I'm really into them. I looked over the past 2 years SCEA threads, and the only African-American to get deferred was a boy with a 24 on his ACT, so I'm not sure whether I should feel good that I proved that AA isn't everything, or if I should feel really really stupid.
I'm glad I got deferred, and not rejected, but i'm not sure what to do. For now, I'm pretending that deferral=rejection. I guess I'm just going to focus on applying to a few more schools, and then I'll have to try to figure out what my next best option is. I wish I had a second choice, so I could just say, well at least I can go to X school, but I don't. So I'm just going to apply everywhere. I did apply for a few scholarship programs, so hopefully I'll have a trip to Scripps in February and one to WashU (again, lol) in March to cheer me up. I'm probably not going to frequent the Yale board anymore, save maybe a random post or two and a bit of lurking as the RD applicants get ready for their big day. I'll miss you guys. But I need to move on.
I'm just glad that so many people got in, and that it wasn't a slaughter like Stanford. I wish that Yale had given me a chance- I really did feel like I belonged there. It really felt like home.

General Comments: Good Luck for all of the RD people! To all of you who got in SCEA, maybe I will see you at Yale! To those deferred, there is still hope so don't give up just make sure you apply other places too. To those rejected, clearly if you applied to Yale, you are super smart and motivated and will undoubtedly do great at whichever college you choose to attend, so just forget Yale and go do your thing! To the CC community in general, thank you for the advice, it has been very helpful for me over the past few months

- Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.98
- Rank: 7/550?
- AP:
- World History (4)
- Chemistry (5)
- Calculus AB (5)
- Biology (5)
- U.S. History (4)
- IB: N/A
- Senior Year Course Load:
- Forensics Workshop (Debate)
- AP (U.S.)Government-Macroeconomics

- AP English Literature
- Leadership A/B (ASB)
- AP Physics
- AP Music Theory
- Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Semifinalist, AP Scholar with Distinction, ABigSmall's Seal of Destruction
Subjective:- Extracurriculars (place weird comments in parenthesis): Violoncello (Grade 3 to present), Debate (does that count?), Orchestra (1st, 2nd, 3rd chairs at different times of course), KIWIN'S (used to be Website/Tech Chair, now I'm Projects Coordinator), other stuff that are more weak (like I did Newspaper Production for 1 year and took self-studied courses on Applied Wikipedia & Blog Reading, Introduction to Counting Ceiling Dots, Advanced Rice Eating)
- Job/Work Experience: I put down orchestra, as we recently became free from the school and are our own entity, but I'm not seeing any direct money. It goes to our summer trip. I also tutor a local youngster in the ways of edumahcation!
- Volunteer/Community service: KIWIN'S, tutoring for NHS, church things
- Summer Activities: Just this past summer I did student research at a research lab for over 200 hours and went to Arizona with my church for short-term summer missions. The summer before I went with my orchestra to play in Ireland and toured the UK. The summer before that I.. Boy Scouts camp?

) Reflection- Strengths: Scores and grades. Maybe the essays, maybe my recs.
- Weaknesses: Leadership, extracurriculars, nothing really outstanding.
- Why you think you were deferred: With what little I've accomplished, Yale's not sure if I can really make use of the time there and if I can really be a true Yale representative. Or maybe they were playing darts and I wasn't hit

Now that I think about it, it's because I decided to skip on that Advanced LEGO Building class I was planning on self-studying. Jeepers. General Comments: w00t w00t for those Accepted! Your guys' hard work paid off! To those who were deferred, I salute you. We can wait in anxious consideration as our grey hairs multiply. Best way to live, methinks. To those rejected, rejoice for the sun will still come up tomorrow. You determine your own future. This school's just one pathway of many.
Now back to the real world. Boy oh boy. I'm quickly snapped back to the same 'ol way of things when I look at all the homework due tomorrow -_-
