Next Up, Residential College Time!

Dudes!

Congrats to all of you that got accepted! In the coming weeks, you'll probably be getting into a bunch of other colleges as well, but as a current Yale student myself, I can tell you that Yale has been pretty much the greatest thing to ever happen to me. I mean, of course, the classes and professors and facilities are really great, but what I think really sets Yale apart from any other university is how happy and nice the student body is. I still can't believe it, but I have yet to meet anyone at Yale that I would classify as a "jerk." It's great, you come to Yale not sure what to expect, but then you look around and everybody is just... normal! Well, of course, everyone is pretty interested in their academic stuff and most people have one or two things that they're really passionate about, but you would be hard pressed to try to fit people into some sort of "Yale" stereotype. So yeah, I strongly encourage you guys to all come up on Bulldog Days and check it out. Even if you get into... that other school, think really hard about turning down Yale. Personally, I was accepted by Yale, Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and Brown PLME and chose to come to Yale because I think it's the best school in the nation for undergrads (and I'm mostly sane!), so yeah... it's a tough decision because there are a lot of great schools out there, but I think Yale is absolutely one-of-a-kind.

AND the residential college system is amazing. If you get to choose which college you're in, definitely go for TIMOTHY DWIGHT!!! Ashe! You can get a feel for what student life is like at Yale by checking out the Timothy Dwight Blog: Timothy Dwight -leave us a comment to let us know you're coming! We expect to see all you guys on Bulldog Days!

Congrats dudes, and rock on!

(after being deferred)

Objective:
  • SAT I (breakdown): 800CR-790M-780W (2370)
  • ACT:
  • SAT II: 800's on physics, math II-C, US history, 780's on bio, chem
  • Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): about 3.97
  • Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1 (tie), two in EA round
  • AP (place score in parenthesis): 5's on US History, Computer Science A, Microeconomics (self-study), Macroeconomics (self-study)
  • IB (place score in parenthesis):
  • Senior Year Course Load: AP Euro (A), AP English Lit (A), AP Spanish (A-), AP US Gov (A), AP Stats (A+), AP Physics C (A+). BC Calc through CTY over summer (A).
  • Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Nothing major, but NJ Science League: 1st in area every year. Bergen County Math League: 1st in group. Academic Decathlon: First and second in region, awards in almost everything. National Merit winner, AP Scholar with Honor.
Subjective:
  • Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
Cross-country (with award given to one senior a year), winter track, spring track, GSA (treasurer), SADD (president), NHS, Earth club, politics club, quiz bowl. Bible quizzing team - significant time commitment. Some extracurricular involvement in music.
  • Job/Work Experience: Tutoring.
  • Volunteer/Community service: Local library, picking up recyclables, community service club.
  • Summer Activities: Summer school tennis, cross-country camp, calculus BC through CTY.
  • Essays: Good?
  • Teacher Recommendation: Don't know about one. Other very positive, "best student ever taught," etc.
  • Counselor Rec: Don't know.
  • Additional Rec: Sent after deferral -- awesome.
  • Interview: On-campus over summer. I think this did me in. My sister had been diagnosed with cancer, I had barely slept the entire summer, and I was a complete mess, and I didn't bother explaining any of this.
Other
  • Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes.
  • Intended Major: EA: Undecided. RD: Physics.
  • State (if domestic applicant): NJ
  • Country (if international applicant):
  • School Type: Good public.
  • Ethnicity: White
  • Gender: Female
  • Income Bracket: ~100k, but significant costs due to sister's illness.
  • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
Reflection
  • Strengths: Standardized testing.
  • Weaknesses: Interview. Plus they want to see personality, and I don't think my essays or "unfocused" EC's convey that.
  • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Deferred then rejected. See strengths and weaknesses.
  • Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
    Accepted: MIT, UVa, Brandeis.
    Waitlisted: Princeton, Stanford.
General Comments: I probably should've applied RD, because I would've been able to write quality essays and do a good interview.

I'm glad I got deferred, though, because MIT became my first choice while I was researching schools, and now I'm going there!

Is it just me or do I see more and more 4.0s getting rejected? I'm too scared to check right now...I've had numerous disappointments with colleges this past week (rejected at Georgetown and Northwestern) and I'm not quite ready to find out that I've been rejected at Yale too.

Submitted a supplement - a program I made to download YouTube videos.
  • Job/Work Experience: At a DQ and a CVS/Pharmacy, both for a year. I've been offered an internship this summer building automated manufacturing robots for a medical silicone-molding company.
  • Volunteer/Community service: Lots of stuff through church and NHS. Spent a week last summer in Juarez, MX building houses and providing daycare.
  • Summer Activities: Just volunteering and work.
  • Essays: I thought they were great. I had several CCers review them and also some people from my school. Talked about how I developed an interest in computers and about how being a year younger than my classmates has influenced my goals and motivations.
  • Teacher Recommendations: Didn't see one of them, but the other one was fantastic.
  • Counselor Rec: She barely knows me, so I dunno.
  • Additional Rec: N/A
  • Interview: Went pretty well. She seemed genuinely impressed with some of the stuff I've done, and it was a fun conversation.
Other
  • Applied for Financial Aid?: yep.
  • Intended Major: Computer Science
  • State (if domestic applicant): MN
  • School Type: Small rural/suburban mix. Has never sent a student to an Ivy League school to my knowledge.
  • Ethnicity: Caucasian, but I don't think I reported it.
  • Gender: M
  • Income Bracket: ~$150,000 - 200,000
  • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nothin'
Reflection
  • Strengths: Strong self-motivation, very interested in a specific subject. EC's were at least kind of competitive.
  • Weaknesses: Nothing really makes me stand out. SAT could be better.
  • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think my stats are in the range where it all comes down to how good my admission officer's cup of coffee was on the morning he saw my application. I don't have any hooks that make me stand out from the other 26,000+ applicants. My intended major might have negatively influenced my app and made admissions officers think that my chances of matriculating were low. My school's small size and relative isolation from subjects that interest me (computer science) probably doesn't help as well. There isn't much space for a computer club or something similar in a school where ~1/2 of the student body lives on a farm of some kind.
  • Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: All of my other applications were at state universities. Nothing too challenging to get into. Accepted at: U of MN, U of WA, U of IL, and U of MA.
General Comments: I love Yale, but it's going to be great to not pay for the next four years of college. With a full ride to the U of MN, I'm really blessed to have the financial freedom to choose practically any graduate school I desire. The current economic climate may have prevented me from attending Yale even if I had been accepted. I put everything I had into my Yale application, but sometimes things just don't work out the way I want them to. I wish the rest of you the best of luck, and no matter where you go, have a fantastic college experience!
