REJECTED
Numbers
SAT: 2220 (M 720, CR 730, W 770)
ACT: 33 (S 27, R 33, M 33, W 36)
AP: United States History (5)
GPA (non-weighted): 3.9
Rank: 6th percentile
Application
Essay
I felt really good about my common application essay, and my Yale optional essay.
Recommendations
Well, I know that at least one teacher was authentic in scope and stylistic character, though I fear the other teacher and my counselor wrote the standard, generic recommendations that do little to impress.
Interview
I sort of "refused" to have a Yale interview. I was too timid. And look what happened...
Personal Information

Other Factors: I do no volunteering, but I do have a part-time job as an usher at the local movie theater. I am a National Merit Finalist.

- Summer Activities: People to People Student Ambassador Program (2006), Yale Daily News Summer Journalism Program (2007), Georgetown International Relations Program (2008)
- Essays: My common app essay was the most honest piece of writing I've ever written. I talked about the my struggle of being Ghanaian-American in Ghana. my Yale supplement was really fun to write. i talked about cutting of my hair so i could become natural
- Teacher Recommendation: great; I have a really good relationship with my teachers
- Counselor Rec: great; my counselor knows me well
- Additional Rec: none
- Interview: I did an on-campus interview with a current Yale senior. We talked about Harry Potter so, by my standards, i think it went well lol

- Country (if international applicant): USA
- School Type: all-girls, Catholic high school
- Ethnicity: black (Ghanaian-American)
- Gender: female
- Income Bracket: middle-class

Reflection- Strengths: essays, possibly recs (didn't see)
- Weaknesses: test scores, ecs
- Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really don't know. I guess they overlooked the test scores and looked at me as a person and liked what they saw.
- Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted at Penn, Duke, Swarthmore, Tufts, Georgetown, George Washington, American, Fordham, UConn. rejected/waitlisted nowhere
General Comments:
I really really really was not expecting to get accepted. I never allowed myself to dream of getting accepted to such a prestigious school because of the incredible competition. That's why the Yale acceptance came as the biggest surprise and shock and every other emotion you could think of. When I logged into the site to access my decision, expecting a rejection, I was pretty calm because I had just found out that I got into UPenn, which had been my first choice. When a blue screen came up with a picture of a bulldog, congratulating and welcoming me to the Class of 2013, with the Yale fight song playing in the background, I ran downstairs to tell my mother, and started crying. I bawled like a baby for a good 30 minutes. I was shocked and overwhelmed -- I still am, but fortunately, I've stopped crying lol.

| Decision: Accepted Objective:- SAT I (breakdown): CR: 710 / M: 650 / W: 730 (Total: 2090)
- SAT II: Literature: 680 / Mathematics Level 2: 600 / French with Listening: 710
- Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9
- Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1st
- IB (place score in parenthesis): Pending (predicted score: 37 out of 42)
- Senior Year Course Load: IB Diploma (Spanish A1 HL, English A2 HL, History of the Americas HL, French AB Initio SL, Biology SL, Mathematics SL)
- Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Highest GPA Award, Model UN prizes throughout my high school years
Subjective:- Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Model United Nations Club (President), Student Tutoring Program (Founder), Student Body Council (Secretary), Tennis Club, French Club, Investment Club, Guitar, CIS Accreditation Student Representative
- Volunteer/Community service: Diplomatic Women's Association, Interact (Rotary Club), Model UN delves itself into many community service activities
- Summer Activities: Cultural/volunteer trips to El Salvador (in addition to visiting my maternal family)
- Essays: Excellent; Common App: about an influential person, Yale Supp: very creative, interesting and unique
- Teacher Recommendations: Short, concise, and above all, very personal and informative; both teachers read them to me once I got my decision
- Counselor Rec: Great, I think; I was able to establish a solid relationship with my counselor, so she put some extra effort into my rec
- Interview: My best interview, much more similar to a very interesting 1-hour long conversation. Interviewer seemed very pleased
Other- Intended Major: Ethics, Politics and Economics/English
- School Type: Private
- Ethnicity: White/Caucasian
- Gender: Male
- Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None, unless being an international student counts as one
Reflection- Strengths: Essays/Recs/Interview
- Weaknesses: SATs I/SATs II
- Why you think you were accepted: My SATs are not as high as one would like them to be, but my Common App and Supp essays kicked ass, seriously. I am not well-rounded as a student, so I positioned myself as a leader: Model UN, Student Council, while making emphasis on my tutoring ventures. I am positive that my interview secured my spot in Yale.
- Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected: Harvard, Princeton / Waitlisted: Wharton (UPenn) / Accepted: Yale (duh), NYU, Bentley, Boston U, American (last three were safeties)
General Comments:
I still cannot believe I'm a Yalie. I have already accepted their offer of admissions, and I am still on cloud nine. I am in awe, mind-boggled. It took me 10 full seconds to process the chanting bulldog in my screen, so I could later scream at the top of my lungs: "Mom, I got into Yale!" It was definitely one of the best moments of my life. Bulldog Days are coming up, and I can't wait to meet everybody. I am extremely eager to experience the next 4 years of my life. Congrats to everyone!

Essays were three weeks of sleeping and writing then sleeping and writing. Nobody went over them.
#1 was a compilation of taxi cab rides I have had. Several NYC taxis, one in Arizona, Chicago, and some others in east coast.
#2 was how a reflection on how I have gotten a life. How I cannot make sense when I am contributing in class, how I have come from making a Yale resume to loving my ECs, and what it would feel like to live in the worst conditions. It was a movie trailer and you need to capture the essay.
