"Topic of your choice" on Common App?

Is it generally a bad idea to choose "topic of your choice" for Yale? Since the Yale Supplement already requires a topic of your choice? Or is it fine to do an original topic for both?

Of course not! The only reason that they even offer suggested topics is to give student's some direction... but obviously some students don't need the help!

Okay, thanks! So, you don't suppose they would think "oh, she must have recycled this from a different colleges' prompt" and frown upon it, thinking it lazy or something?

It's the essay that they're concerned about, not the prompt you used.

i'm pretty new at all this, so pardon me if i ask any questions with blatantly obvious answers :P

you know how the yale supplement prompt asks for something adcoms cant learn about you from the rest of the application?
soo does that mean an introspective essay is better than one dealing with a certain EC you happened to list on the CA?
i just don't want them to think i'm elaborating on another generic EC if i do write a topic related to one...
I guess what I'm asking is an idea of what topics are 'taboo'/meant by the prompt.

I don't think there are any taboo subjects, but I would recommend that you heed the prompt to discuss something that isn't obvious from your application. This essay gives you another outlet for showing them what a multifaceted, interesting person you are. If you do talk about a listed EC, I'd recommend that you tackle it from a unique POV, tell them something that isn't readily apparent from what you've already put on your application.
