Film at Yale

I'm interested in pursuing film (more accurately, TV) after college. By that I mean production/writing. Does Yale have any programs that work well towards this end? I know that I'd like to do the newspaper and/or the radio station (if Yale has one). But academically, do they have any programs that work for this?

Also, does Yale have a TV station? That like shows news and stuff.

Thanks!!

Yale's program is film studies, not production. I think only Harvard of the Ivies has a production major, but I don't know all. The film studies major does include screenwriting and of course a production class or two but it's not a true production program. If you're interested in writing, it will likely fit you better than if you're interested in editing or cinematography or the like.

YES! yale does have a tv station...its called YTV...i think if you google it the website might come up. its a pretty cool channel. also, there are a lot of clubs here centered around film and students can applying for funding to make independent films. its awesome! oh and they have a lot of dean's and master's teas with famous producers and film makers. today i went to a dean's tea with spike lee, actually. it was pretty cool.

how are the post-grad connections for people who want to work in film/tv? can you expect alum to help you out considerably in finding a job in that industry?

I can't speak with any great knowledge about how helpful the name "Yale" might be but if you want connections then you need to go to school in LA, preferably at the USC film school. If you want other connections, then try Tisch at NYU. Everything else pales.

This is not necessarily true if you're only interested in writing because a lot of good writers come from good schools. But talent on that wins out and if you really want to write and have connections, try to get into Harvard and then on to the Lampoon because that is a real feeder.

Sure alums of sorts can help but the world "considerably" is misplaced. They aren't your family. And believe me everyone thinks the way to get "in" is through someone who knows someone so everyone is playing that game. Talent, drive, persistence, risk taking are far more important unless that alum is also your uncle.
