Amherst Class of 2021 ED Discussion Thread

universeitteauniverseittea Registered User Posts: 32 Junior Member
Hey all,

I know it's early, but the November 15th application deadline will be here before we know it! I'm really excited about Amherst (which should be obvious due to the fact that my first action on my College Confidential account is creating an ED thread), and I'm planning on applying Early Decision come November. I'm sure I'm not the only one seriously considering Amherst as their first choice school, so I thought I'd get this up and running to allow for a discussion throughout the application and decisions process. Thank you all for participating, this will be really helpful for everyone. Good luck!

I'm trying to decide whether or not to apply ED. can anyone give me some reasons of why they chose Amherst ED? Im gonna do an overnight to make the decision but I'm just so worried that I'll make the wrong choice and regret it! I'd love to know other people's opinions on why they chose ED.

@ricka8 It's hard to go wrong choosing Amherst! Wait till after you visit to make the decision -- I'm sure after visiting you will learn to love it here!

@ricka8 I just visited last week so it's fresh in my mind. Is saying I love everything about it too vague? Beautiful large campus with a small population, great facilities, great programs that are enabled even further by the open curriculum. Wait for your visit to really decide. I spent a whole day on campus and never once thought that I shouldn't be there, it felt perfect for me. If you like everything objective about the school on paper, just wait to visit to see how you really feel about it when you're there.

@ricka8, how did you do an overnight at amherst before applying and being accepted ? we are looking for a way for my kid to do that before applying ED, but thought it is not possible through the admissions office and we dont know anyone who is a student there that we could ask to host it informally ....

@splokey I went on the school's website and found the page listing all of the tour guides, their bios, and their emails. I just chose one of the students from that list and emailed them asking if I could do an overnight. They were more than happy to host me and I actually just got back from my visit last weekend! It was really great.

@splokey Let me know how it goes if your kid does an overnight! I would love to hear about other people's experiences as well!

Is anyone worried about Amherst feeling a bit small and stifling after a few years? This is a complaint I have heard from some other students on the Internet.

@ricka8, thank you so much, i will . as far as feeling a bit small, we were thinking that effort to take some classes at the consortium schools and or to join an extracurricular club that is based at one of the consortium schools might be a solution to the too-small feeling . my older kid went to a college smaller than Amherst that was part of a consortium and doing that seemed to head off claustrophobia for her, although it involves some extra effort and time.
