HELP! (Essay)

edited December 2006 in Amherst College
I'm having aerious problems with the Amherst essay.

I'm responding to:

"Justice seems to require us to take the perspective of an impartial observer…Often this perspective seems to clash with the perspective that most of us take in our daily lives…where ties of love, commitment, friendship and professional responsibilities seem not only to permit, but to demand, that we treat people unequally."
From Amherst, Summer 2001, Jyl Gentzler, Professor of Philosophy, Amherst College

I'm having problems finding suitable examples. I agree with the quote. Also, hwo do I bring my personality across through this topic?

someone posted somewhere regarding essays for amherst that you need not bring your personality in the essay if you feel that you can give a solid feedback without relating the topic to yourself...

Yeah, I read that, but someone else replied to that saying the dean told them how much they appreciated personal essays.

if this is the case then...talk to some of your close friends, and relatives for a while...or go to the balcony, stare at the sky for a while,, u might come up with an answer...good luck

i am having a more terrible time than you! i havent written the commonapp essay...i have written many rough drafts but i dont like any of them, and am getting really frustrated by now...

I could look at it if you wanted. We could trade commonapp essays :).

Did you do the Amherst essay?
  • davincicodesdavincicodes Registered User Posts: 340 Member
my commonapp essays are not done...they are rough drafts on four of five ideas i had,,,they are just two paragraphs long (at max.). i get these small ideas but i really am not able to extend them...

yah, i am doing the amherst essay now...i am doing the science one..and its pretty straight forward..so no worries,,,i already have in mind what i am going to write..

are you done with your commonapp...well after i finish my commonapp essay, we can think about trading..what d'ya think?

Yeah, I'm done with my Common App. I'm stuck on the Amherst one, though. I'm now doing essays for other schools. They're all pretty straightforward, they're all "why us?" essays.

lol...most of mine are..why (some name) college??.. they are harder than why us essays...but do you mean US as in united states..or us as the college using that to refer to themselves.?
  • TheOneCurlyFryTheOneCurlyFry Registered User Posts: 2,415 Senior Member
I meant us as in the college name. not the US.

btw...which colleges are u applying to besides amherst??
  • TheOneCurlyFryTheOneCurlyFry Registered User Posts: 2,415 Senior Member
A lot. Colgate, Williams, Hamilton, Vassar, Oberlin, Harvard, Yale (long long shots), UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine. I prefer the smaller LACs, though.

    Oh, and you?
  • davincicodesdavincicodes Registered User Posts: 340 Member
a lot as well - uchicago, upenn, amherst, yale, stanford, swarthmore, carleton, etc.

btw. what were your sat scores? and your examination results??
  • TheOneCurlyFryTheOneCurlyFry Registered User Posts: 2,415 Senior Member
    SAT: W: 670, M: 720, CR: 800

    SAT II: M2: 760, Physics: 780, Chem: 800

I got a 114 / 120 in my TOEFL, but Amherst waived my TOEFL score submission requirement because of my 800 in SAT CR.

My examinations are all Indian ones. However, I did get state first in an English exam conducted by Macmillan in association with the University of New South Wales in Australia. This was in 10th grade.
