can anyone get me amherst's fax number? i want to send in some additional stuff via fax, but when i called their number to ask -- it was this recorder message that told me to call after january 20th. so, either they're really bogged down or they just don't like phone calls.

but for real, if anyone has the fax number, help out a broski.

I wonder if they're in their "filing period" when they take all those papers and turn each into a coherent file for each student. They spend their time that way, rather than fielding phone calls from students, so all is ready for the actual Reading Period, which is so very important at that college (no personal interviews; they are dedicated to their own system of very careful reading and discussion of files).

The problem with sending a fax right now with that phone message is you won't be able to verify by phone that the fax was received.

Have you considered sending your extra papers to the Admissions Office by Fedex instead? Look on their website and see if they accept anything by Fedex. I just sent something by Fedex overnight elsewhere and it cost me around $26 (ouch), although exact price might depend on the two locations, yours and theirs.

That way, you can at least track the letter's progress through their system so you'll know it's been delivered. In some places -- I don't know if at Amherst, but at a different college-- Fedex also saved a few days because the truck comes directly to the Admissions Office door/street address, rather than working its way through the college mail system into departments.

It sounds as though speed isn't essential here, so perhaps without the overnight, the Fedex won't cost quite as much as $26.

thanks for the help. i'll see what i can do. amherst is fairly close by, so the price tag for overnight may not -- hopefully -- read $26.

    thanks, though.

Amherst limits its phone lines to just one in January in the admissions office. I wouldn't try a fax, for that reason.
