My son goes to a selective Catholic HS on Long Island, 93 average, unweighted, 2060 new SAT, Puerto Rican heritage. Not that impressive compared to other posters, however he has been interested in Amherst for a long time and has written, visited, etc. Maybe that helped. Also, his school has a good track record at Amherst. Last year five students were accepted. His school is very rigorous, doesn't offer any electives, requires 4 years of all academic courses etc. Did your son apply?

I suspect that S was sent an application, but it probably remains unopened in his mess of a room. My guess is based on S's having the same PSAT index score as his older brother had, and his older brother had gotten an Amherst invitation when he was a senior.

Based on what I saw on CC, I e-mailed Amherst's admissions office about S, and they have now sent S an app, which S plans to fill out by the deadline. Sounds like a nice potential opportunity since this S, unlike his brother, likes LACs.

Has anyone here gotten any other invitations or opportunities? S will be going to Wash U's diversity weekend (S has sent his SAT scores to Wash U, and attended an info session at his h.s. last year. He also is in line to be a National Merit commended, National Achievement semi-finalist), and has been invited to apply to go to Cornell Engineering School's diversity weekend. The latter seemed to have come from S's being a Venture Scholar.

Northstarmom: My son also got the Cornell invitation, but he is not interested in engineering, so he won't be attending. He is also a Venture Scholar. Our sons seem to have a bit in common. What state are you in?

Anyone going from New York? Is is a 5hr train ride so maybe you can meet on the train and have some company.

I'd take the bus. It's cheaper and stops right in front of the campus.

The Cornell Invitation is sent to many upon many, very cometitive, their are only 40 people accepted. Also, if you're taking the train or bus, the college said they will pay for it. They'll pay for all except gas/car transit.

If you send proof of financial hardship, Amherst will pay for your visit to the college. Amherst covered my friend's flight from California last year.

It could actually work against you, so I would not advise doing so.

Amherst08 - bus is cheaper, but unless Amherst changed its policies from last year, the college would be paying for the expenses.

Last year I went to both the AMherst & Williams DOH weekends. I took a bus to Williams and they reimbursed the bus ticket. My uncle drove me up to Amherst and they paid him back mileage money.
