What happens if you retake an AP exam and do worse?

For example, you did badly on your ap world exam (got a 3) you want to get higher score for ap scholar award, so you decide to retake ap world exam the following year. Sadly you did worse and recieve a 2. What happens? do your 3 get replaced by the 2 or does the highest stay the same? Will your average ap score go down? Thanks!
