We stayed at the Butte. Its nice, beautiful pool area, lots of steps if thats an issue for you.Do you want a resorty type place or only going for move in? Theres a Holiday Inn right on Apache that fine and very convenient if you're only doing the move in (you'll never use the place's facilities). Theres a Hampton Inn I think... close by we stayed there for graduation it was also convenient and nice enough..I'll look it up and PM you. Dont stay at the Twin Palms, thats where they place the kids who dont have dorm rooms yet.Dont be tempted to stay further into Scottsdale, traffic will be a mess..though you can go there and stay after like we did,or go up to Sedona for a day or two after.Generally, whatever hotel the Parents Association is touting will be nice and give you a good deal. There are two places off of Mill,we stayed at the one thats not a chain, very nice and convenient for eating/strolling and the U is walkable from there, but its pricey, pools on the roof, and parking is valet only and an issue if your tooling around purchasing things etc for move in

oops, looks like we are at the one with the valet parking. And tooling around shopping is exactly what we expect to be doing. CathyMee, how long after the move in date did you stick around? We're arriving a day before (daughter has a late move in day) and leaving the night after move in day. If my daughter is anything like my son, she will have little to do with us once she's in and has met a few people. We'll attend a few parent events and hope she'll bless us with a final dinner. Did you stay through the entire weekend?

since we were coming from NY we stayed longer..various lengths of time each visit... and made vacations out of our trips.we did two on campus move ins, and one off campus apt move in.after that D had a car there and didnt need us anymore.they normally wont have anything to do with you after the second day UNLESS they find they still "need stuff".Best advice is to buy them dinner and then say goodnight so they can partake in the SunDevil Welcome stuff.Since we had to fly in and out of Phoenix,we circled back from Sedona,Grand Canyon etc and spent one last night near campus before flying home..gave the kid and new roommate or friends a dinner out and last shopping excursion. We only attended parent weekend the first year and its reassuring to attend..besides the fun activities, you get to see them all settled in their new home..Be prepared for hot hot move in weather..her freshman year was 110.They will have water stations set up..take advantage of them.People are friendly but I dont remember alot of move in "helpers" like some parents report at other colleges.D lived in the Honors Complex so move in parking was easy, friends who lived in the high rise areas had troubles with parking.
More hotel info for OP:Mill Ave has the Tempe Mission Palms..thats the non chain one.Very cushy and convenient especially for eating/strolling,parents theres even movie theaters there if you can move in the evenings after your hard move in work!the chain hotel there is a Courtyard by Marriott.Friends stayed there and enjoyed it as well. The Hotel we used for graduation was the Hampton Inn on N Scottsdale Rd. Its further away but not all the way into Scottsdale.Theres lots of trafficaround there..beware!. The hotel the parents association is featuring this time around is way into Old Town Scottsdale..its further away then they make it sound, but in a really nice setting..nice area to walk around, eat in,lots of art galleries. Everything you wont have time for or will be too tired to enjoy LOL. Honestly, all you are going to do at your hotel is sleep!
They were finishing up a new SpringHill Suites on Rio Salado Parkway last time I was there, thats a pretty good location. The Buttes is greatif you have the time to enjoy the facilities, like staying an extra day.And like I said,we used the Holiday Inn/Tempe ASU numerous times.
And you folks are so lucky theres an Ikea in Tempe!!D shopped there during her senior year when it first opened. Now she lives in St Louis and wishes there was one there.
Enjoy ASU and Tempe. I sure miss travelling there, its just beautiful, especially the sky,the sunsets and the campus area around Gammage and the School of Music (D was a music major).I just love the stucco, southwestern feel and all the fountains and sculptures on campus. And the palm trees and cactus and I could go on and on!!

One last idea if you want to add a vacation to your move in..really cheap flights out of Phoenix on Southwest to Las Vegas.stay a day or so,fly back and then home! Its also driveable, the kids at ASU do it all the time(sort of a rite of passage)..about 5 hours.

we'll be going for a visit (HS senior) - probably the Saturday visit in September (9/2 - Labor Day w/e) so we'd love a resort-type hotel.
The Buttes looked beautiful on line but I was concerned aobut some of the reviews I'd read on a travel site, so I appreciate the good feedback....
I hadn't thought about heading over to Sedona or Las Vegas, but I like that idea too!

Resort style hotel---we love the Hyatt resort at Gainy Ranch (Scottsdale)
Eat and Sandolo (ASU voice student-waiters sing opera)

We are staying at the Tempe Mission Palms right now. We're here for our daughter's move in. It is a perfect location and a very nice hotel. We've been swimming in the rooftop pool each night and making friends with lots of other parents. The proximity to the campus is a big plus for move in purposes.
