Are “Optional” Application Essays and Videos Really Optional?

Your target school says you can submit an "optional" video or a "recommended" essay -- are these really optional? https://www.collegeconfidential.com/articles/are-optional-application-essays-and-videos-really-optional/

I think that "optional" videos are likely more "optional" than "optional" essays.

I personally would not do a video unless it were part of an arts supplement.

Personally, I think submitting an optional video/essay would further help the admissions officers in seeing what kind of person you are. Giving them a better picture of who you really are will always help. So if you have the time, it wouldn't hurt to submit it!

I would definitely say do the essay, unless it's something truly optional like LGBTQ+ identity or something like that.

As for the video, if it wasn't for something like a music major or something -- I'm not sure I would do it unless it's my #1 dream school or its some crazy program.
