Athletic capabilities but not asking for scholarship

Hi there,

I currently play rugby in high school and I know that most colleges do not offer athletic scholarships for rugby players as rugby is usually a club sport.

My question is will contacting the coach of the team and expressing interest in participating help me in the admissions process?

I believe that I could be an asset to almost any college team as I was/am the team captain and I might be part of the national youth team in my country (still trying out). What do you guys think?
