I want to keep UIUC an option because it's cheap and I have family there, but I don't think I can get into the business school. I want to major in marketing.

However, you go through the Liberal Arts school to get to the schools great advertising program. I'm fairly confident that I can get in there.

My questing is... are there a lot of job opportunities for an advertising major?

Any opinions are apreciated.

I would suggest you don't do an advertising major if you want to go into marketing. Advertising may provide some soft creative skills but those are not valued. It's the quantitative stuff that companies care more about. I work for a big brand firm and they recruit out of quantitative majors for top colleges, ie. engineering and econ.

If you get an advertising major, you're looking to go into advertising (which you don't want to do if you want make at least some money).

Obviously do not go into advertising if your real goal is marketing.

that being said, advertising is not a major and you can make loads of money in advertising. Look, marketing majors are paid **** too -- so advertising majors aren't alone. your prospects out of college will probably be about 35-40k a year but your lifestyle should be pretty relaxed. In both of these majors you can work your way up and make loads of money, there are creative directors in NY for big ad houses that are probably making huge bucks and there are people in marketing who have been in it long enough to make huge bucks too. These are two paths where you will start with **** pay and have to have patience to work up.

Advertising IS a major, but many schools don't offer it (USC has a fantastic communications school but only an advertising minor). Advertising vs. marketing, there isn't that large of a salary gap, and while you may be working a lot less than an i-banker, I know plenty of people who believe they got where they are in advertising because they worked long hours and put in the extra effort.
