Cal Poly Journalism/Communications Major?

I'm most likely going to Cal Poly in the fall and my proposed major is Journalism. I was wondering if anyone would tell me about the major and how it is? Also, if anyone could tell me the major differences in the Communications and the Journalism department?

Hi I'm a second year journalism major at cal poly slo and I absolutely love it. For journalism there is three concentrations print, broadcast, and public relations. I'm pr and my roommate is broadcast. I absolutely love the program it is very hands on. Every single pr class I've taken I have done a pr project in. So it is great since I have started building my pro-folio before I have graduated. We have worked with companies in SLO and created pr plans for them. Same with broadcast you work with CPTV and learn how to do everything in a studio and same with print you work with the Mustang Daily, our newspaper. I don't know too much about communications but there are no concentrations so it is a lot broader. I feel like if you want a specific job within media it is a lot better to stay with Journalism since it is so specific and you learn through hands on application. I love it here it was one of the best decisions I made. Ask more questions if you have them =]]] and I hope you choice cal poly!

I am debating between the two, Cal Poly SLO and SDSU for Journalism and most likely an emphasis in Public Relations. I have been doing research about Cal Poly and have come across it's recent faculty and Dept. troubles and was wondering which school you think would be best, for education and post grad opportunities?

    Thank you!

Slo's department has had some probably recently. Our head director had to step down for stupid reasons. I think it is mainly because print teachers don't really like public relations people and just dumb drama in general. It hasn't effected students really at all and I know the program is trying to work itself out. I really love the public relations department though. The main teacher is professor Dan Eller. He does PR for Hearst Castle so it is great to hear his experiences. Also it is such a great hands on program. IN each PR class I have taken I'm have made a pr plan for companies around slo so I am already starting my pro-folio before I graduate. There is some drama and no one really knows if like anything will come of it we are trying to find a new head chair person but we have a lot of great teachers with great experience. I would recommend visiting both campuses and seeing which one suits you. However, don't let the stupid petty drama defer you from coming here it really is a great program and if you are accepted as Journalism for next year you will definitely continue in that for all four years. good luck deciding and p.s I love it here best decision yet =P

When I applied as a freshman 2 years ago I really wanted to do journalism. Now I'm planning on doing a double major in English and Communication Studies, but hearing that Cal Poly has a journalism with an emphasis in public relations is making me hesitant to pick up COMS instead. I was really set on the journalism major as a freshman but switched to English in community college because I wanted to have the convenience of being able to pick up a teaching credential and do high school English if it's what I felt like doing later in life. Do you happen to know anyone double majoring in Journalism and English? Ah, I'm so confused. :( I would like to eventually do something in public relations/human resources/counseling/teaching and I just don't know how I should pin point my majors. I really wish I could just do journalism and continue on to write for an awesome newspaper but I need to be realistic :)

can you go more in depth into PR?
I just accepted my offer to cal poly and now that you say there are concentrations and a lot of experience, i actually really love that. I don't really know if i want to go into print or PR, mainly because I'm not so sure about PR so if you could go more in depth, that would be great! :]
