Confused about housing - can I pick my roommates??

KonaLuvKonaLuv Registered User Posts: 144 Junior Member
So I got an e-mail from Cal Poly saying housing applications are going to be available starting tomorrow and that housing is available on a first-come first-serve basis. I heard that many of these housing options fill up quickly, but from what I understand, you can't submit an application until you're ready to put down a deposit, which I'm not ready to do yet. I looked at the housing section on the cal poly website, and I am still confused. I'm a transfer student. What housing options are available for me? My major is animal science, which is the college of agriculture, food, and environmental sciences. Can I have roommates that have the same major as me? How can I talk to potential roommates? Should I be worried if I'm not able to send in my housing application soon? Will spots fill up that quickly? Thank you for your help!

It's best to send in your deposit ASAP to secure a spot. It's refundable up until a certain time (I believe in August or sometime). I'm not sure how the transfer student housing deposit works. You might want to check out the Facebook page for Cal Poly Class of 2016 and see if they have info. about finding a roommate there for transfers. I'm sure they will for incoming freshman. Usually transfers live in Poly Canyon Village or Cerro Vista apts. Best wishes to you! You also might try giving Housing a call at Cal Poly and see what they suggest about finding a potential apt. mate. Best wishes to you!

Usually they have a website or something for you to enter data. Best of luck paying for everything.

If Cal Poly is like other CSU's or UC's... you can select your roommate... but you BOTH have to put each other down on your applications.

You need to call housing at Cal Poly to walk you through the process. We put down the entire deposit last year in cash only to have it refunded later when financial aid kicked in. We just did not know any better the first time around. On the License Signature Page for housing check the Financial Aid box under payment method and you will not need to pay out of pocket at this time if you expect to be receiving financial aid or loans. This year when my kid applied for campus apartments we did not put down any deposit and his spot was reserved due to expected receipt of finical aid.

Hopefully you submitted your FAFSA and mailed in your GPA verification form to the California Student Aid Commission for Cal Grants by the priority deadline yesterday (3/2). If not, get it in anyway ASAP.

Yes, you can pick your roommates. You can scout them out here on CC or on the appropriate Facebook page -- there must be a handful of them for Cal Poly. Either that or connect with friends that will be transfers too. My kid wanted randomly selected roommates and it work out great.

If you see the housing application , there is a sort a list where you can request your roommates. All you have to do is get their housing ID. It will be on one of the the pages in the housing application process. You must ask your friend for her ID , then then put that ID in that list. They explain it on the website. Again konaluv , congrats on getting in CalPoly ! I hope to see you in the fall !

EDIT : also as ventureman said , BOTH of you must put eachother's ID on that list.

Does anyone have experience with requesting roommates? Is it still hard to accomplish even if you both put your housing ID on the application? You'd have to list the same interests, don't you?

Basically, is it easy to get the roommate you requested?

If you both put each other's ID down on the housing preference, it shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure you both specify which dorms you want in the same order. I'm not sure what you mean by listing the same interests. They really don't ask that. I believe they just want to know the smokers and non-smokers so they can make a good match. Best wishes!

I have not accepted my admission, so I haven't seen the housing app. Are you able to request two roommates? I know you can triple dorm, but I haven't heard of anyone saying you can request two of your friends as roommates.
