Do you need a car?

Is SLO an easy place to get around without a car? Because if all possible, I'd like to not bring my car down from Alaska (it's really expensive, even just to drive down there!). Does the town have good public transportation? I know it's pretty good weather all year long, could I ride my bike around easily?

You don't need a car. In fact as a freshman I think it would be a detriment. You'll be the taxi service.

You don't need a car. There is a bus (free!) that stops on campus that goes to the downtown area (among other stops). It's easy to bike around town, too. Leave the car at home, at least for your first year.
