For those who were accepted to Cal Poly SLO, why do you think you got in? What made you stand out compared to those who where rejected?

Also for those who were rejected, why do you think you were?

Thanks for the future responses. Your insights will give me an idea of some of the things I will need consider. Much appreciation.

With Cal Poly, it's all by the numbers, so a high gpa and a high sat or act. Everything else is largely superfluous, although a hard class load is probably taken into account as well.
Accepted into Materials Engineering by the way, 3.92 gpa and 1970 sat.

P.S. please add what year accepted because each year things differ. Thank you

It is also about the major you chose. Cal Poly admits only by major. The more impacted the major the harder to get in. They also only look at the CR and math portion of your SAT, although all the numbers are reported on the application including SAT IIs.
    Accepted into Computer Science.
2.9 GPA and 2070 sat, but 1450 CR and math. SAT II math II 780 and US History 770. I also took a very rigorous course load, including 7 AP courses.

I got in for Mech Eng this past year and yea it seems like your stats and your location are the main things that matter. I got accepted with a 4.3 weighted gpa and a 33 on the act, and 760 on both math 2 and chem although I dont know if they care much about sat 2s. And taken 10 APs.

My friend who is probably around the same stats didn't get in for civil engineering though. I don't know her specific GPA or test scores though but I know she has above a 4.0 weighted so it was surprising that she got rejected.

    Hopes that helps.

If you really want to get into Cal Poly SLO, use common sense when choosing your major and apply early... Its as simple as that.

If you want do Business but your grades are below a 3.9 then put down agricultural business or industrial technology instead.

If you want Nutrition but have grades below a 4.0, choose Food Science.

If you want to get into the Engineering department but dont have immaculate stats, it might be smart to choose General Engineering.

If trying to be Pre Med choose Physics or Chem instead of Biology.

It really is completely about choosing the right major so that you are not going to be trapped into getting denied.
