I really want to be an engineer but I still need to pick what type of engineer I should be and what college has good classes for engineering.

generally speaking, from the mean strength of the engineering program:

    Best for undergrad:
    Harvey Mudd
    Caltech

    Great for undergrad:
    USC
    UC Berkeley
    Stanford

    Good for undergrad:
    Cal Poly SLO
    UCI
    UCLA

    Best for grad school:
    Caltech
    Stanford
    UC Berkeley

    Great for grad school:
    USC

It depends on what type of engineering you're interested in. There are a lot of good places that people have listed that are good for engineering in general, but you can distinguish between which has the strongest department in specific majors after you have a good idea. You can always change what you're doing, but if you have a general idea that can really help with your decision.

If you're not sure you aren't going to go wrong with a place like Caltech (you ought to be fairly sure that you love math and science though).

I chose UC Berkeley because it had a really strong EECS department and I liked the environment.

If you're unsure when applying, all of the colleges other people have listed are good, and you will probably want to distinguish them based on how you like the environment, students, and just how you feel about going there overall.

Going to each college can also help you get a better idea of what each department does in terms or research, what kind of internships students do, and what fields their graduates typically go into. All I can say is that the more information you collect about each college the better you'll feel about choosing to apply and later attend one of them.

This is nuts! Generally I don't go out of my way to dispute someone, but this is absolutely nuts! I don't have anything against CalPoly, but in no conceivable way is it best in the country.

Yeah I would say that Cal Poly might be better than some of the lower ranked UCs, but it isn't as good as Caltech, Stanford, Berkeley, or USC. But it seems a lot of people think that.
