Olympiads vs. Research

I'm curious about how Caltech views applicants that have participated and won in science and math Olympiads vs. those who have conducted independent research. Are one kind favored over the other?

I'm pretty sure Caltech has students of both kinds (plus many who did both). It really comes down to the quality of your wins and/or research, as well as other parts of the application.
