Help! Staying hopeful!

edited May 2011 in College Admissions
I've been waitlisted to West Chester University, my top school.
I'm an average student, however I know I would be best at WCU, so I'm wondering how to show them that?

I recently made them a sort of thank you card for their consideration (handmade, I'm very into art) also telling them if chosen for admission, I will be enrolling. The card was complete with a hand drawn and colored picture of the schools mascot. I thought maybe when they see all the time and effort I've put into the card, they may realize I have the potential to be admitted.

What else could I do?
I found out in 2010 :
13619 applicants
6667 admitted
2248 enrolled

1205 waitlisted
637 accepted their wait list position
i can't find out how many were taken off of the waitlist.

my letter stated they had 14700 applications for a class of 2207.
any help is appreciated!

You should call their admission office on Monday and let them know that you definitely plan on matriculating if you get off the waitlist. Have you received any awards since application? How are your 3rd quarter grades? You may want to send some new information to the along these lines.

my grades are pretty average, As & Bs
I recently did a self portrait i'm quite proud of

I'm honestly a "nothing special" applicant, however if i've gotten to the waitlist, they must've seen something.

I handmade a letter telling them they were my number one school, and i will be calling tomorrow, but what should i ask ?

I think the thank you letter is really original, and a good idea. When you call, ask them if there is anything else that you can send in order for them to reconsider your waitlist status; another rec letter, maybe from an art teacher? I don't know how far away the school is from you, but maybe a personal visit to the admissions office? How much research have you done on the school? When you talk to the admissions officer, talk about what you can add to the school, i.e., your art, with specifics to that school. They want to hear the love for their school, and why you would be a good fit. This is the perfect time, as they will have gotten decisions by tomorrow. Be confident, as I am sure you are so much more than a "nothing special" applicant.

thank you wrldtravlr, I am going in undecided but with hopes of becoming an art student. I've been told by many people I should ask for an interview, but I'm not sure how to go about that (*Calls* "Hi can i have an interview? *Awkward silence*)

i think WCU may have been the only college to actually read my essay, in it, i explain why my junior year grades were much different than my freshman and sophomore grades. I experienced the loss of a friend to suicide and it really had a large impact on my grades.

I'm just very scared i won't get admitted, or worse if i dont have a place to go in the fall.

    Paramore-
Call them tomorrow and talk to them about accepting a spot, and talk about your art, and if you can have an interview so they can further get to know you. Practice what to say with a family member or something. Just because that has been the case for two years doesn't mean all hope is lost. This is a very weird year in admissions, and it just might be that many people who applied also applied to many schools. Good luck, and let me know how it goes.

One more thing, if this doesn't work out, (but I really hope it does for you!) there will be a list of colleges, I think May 15, that will be opening up their admissions. I can't remember what the list is called, but maybe some other nice CCer will post any threads about it here for you. I am still pretty unwieldy with this site, can't find it.

Also, do you have a guidance counselor that could call West Chester for you?

I think I'm going to call for an interview tomorrow, that chart has me so worried though..
I'm usually very confident in interviews, but I can be pretty shy on the phone

I was hoping many people applied there, because its a state school, just as a back up for bigger name schools, I know of two classmates that have turned down admission to there for other colleges

thank you for being so positive with this, its been a bit tough for me lately

Can you talk with your guidance counselor tomorrow? If he/she can call, that may also help.

i'm going to try to, our guidance dept is really rude and doesnt help students much, but its worth a shot
  • paramoreparamore Registered User Posts: 29 New Member
i went to my guidance dept today and he was shocked to find i had been rejected.
he told me to call west chester and ask for an interview since i am on the wait list

i called, they told me they dont do interviews
    :\

    paramore-

Did you tell them you would definitely take a spot? Could you go back to your guidance counselor and please ask him to call? If he was shocked maybe there was a mistake made. Do you have a parent that could get involved to talk to the guidance counselor.

What is your financial situation if you do need to apply to other schools?

Keep your chin up; its not over till its over.

I told them in the letter I sent them I would be enrolling if offered a spot

This afternoon my guidance counselor said he "has a connection" to a college I was rejected from and is going to call for me

This year has really taken a toll on my families wallet!
