How Will Academic Dishonesty Affect Me?

Hello. So, I am a freshman in high school, and was recently caught by my teacher using notes I printed from online in a reading check instead of my own. Obviously this was a really dumb move on my part, I feel really bad about it, and I fully owned up to it and apologized. Other than this incident, I have had no infractions at my school and am maintaining good grades in five honors classes. I'm not sure yet if this (relatively minor?) infraction will show up on my record, but if it does, how will that affect my chances of admission to top colleges? Will they perhaps not treat it as harshly since this occurred my freshman year? I plan to have this never happen again. Do you guys have any thoughts or advice regarding this?

No one knows how this shows up on your high school transcript. Go talk to your counselor.

Generally, the question asked on college applications is have you ever been suspended for academic dishonesty. If you weren't formally punished I would say it probably wouldn't show up on your record. And personally I did have an academic conduct violation freshman year and since I've had no infractions since then it didn't seem to hurt my chances too much.

"Have you ever been found responsible for a dsciplinary violation...from 9th grade forward, whether related to academic misconduct or behavioral misconduct that resulted in a disciplinary action? ...could include, but are not limited to, probation, suspension, removal, dismissal or expulsion from the institution."

It is also asked on the GC form, so you have to see what the school's action is and whether it is something the school will report. Yes, academic dishonesty is serious to adcoms. Don't do it again and be the sort of kid yor GC will say, learned from the incident. You will also have to write an explanation.

So, whether it hurts you are not depends on the hs and depends on how you act from this point forward.
